Need input on a sub $2,000 SUV (nsfw)
« on: August 01, 2009, 12:33:30 PM »

Craigslist is coming up with high mileage 1990 4Runners, some pathfinders, etc.  I don't care about mileage if it's going to last a while.

Priority list:
1) Reliability... it's gonna be my daily driver in the near future.  I don't mind working on a vehicle, just not every other day and for twice as much $ as I paid for it.
2) 4x4 capability
3) Everything else (horsepower, creature comforts, safety, etc... not THAT important)

I will help you find a motor and also help you get it in. We could park it in my the garage and we could knock it out in a few hours.

I would pick up any one of them. All have easy to find parts and are pretty easy to work on. I would lean more towards the civics than the others, but thats because im kinda a older honda fan.

4runner no questions asked.

Always way over priced though. Hes not gona be out mudding in it. Just something to mob around in the snow and maybe a loging road to get to a campsite. My vote is for a RT4wd  civic wagon.

I'll keep a jeep in mind too.  Which engine has a better design - the 4 cylinder 22re or the v6 3vz?

ford explorer with the 4.0l and ttb front suspension++MUST BE MANUAL++ and check to make sure the 4x4 acuator works (they sieze up from not useing). I hate the 4runner 3.0l v6 and the autos and the 5 spd and the torsion bars with rear coils.

but you know the rt4wd wagon and a 10 pounds owns all.

i love the 4runner because it is dead reliable. i can't remember how many times my friend drove in and out of town going 75 wot the whole way. (yeah it was low on power/bigger tires).  but never a problem with it.

and his jeep cherokee with the 4.0L 6 cly.(?)  only issue was leaky injectors, and a steering shimmy. but that was due to the 4.5" lift and 31's.

Isuzu Trooper. They're worthless and easy to find cheap. Very reliable and very capable. Japaneese made and they're awesome trucks. (crazy shit, like it has a frame under it, amongst many other oddities).

Troopers.  I don't know what I love about them more, how they crack between the valve seats for no reason, or the engine harness catches on fire for no reason.

I've never seen or heard of either of these problems. But I can say they're great trucks for the money, and pretty damn reliable. Just drove my 86' Trooper 260 miles to Starkville. 22.5 MPG too.

That would probably be worth looking at. In my experience with toyota's mileage means nothing if it runs good, and has oil changes.

The 22-RE is easier to work on, especially in a 4runner/truck chassis. There's more room

The 3vze does have more appropriate umph for the 4runner though, but is a bit tighter on space under the hood.

Bottom line toyota makes some extremly reliable vehicles that last forever. only problem is in most cases engine/drivetrain outlasts the body.

22r FTW my mother old 4runner had 350k on it when she got rid of it. Still ran great, oh and as far as maintenance she would change the oil every 8k :-X the truck would not die.!!!

Troopers.  I don't know what I love about them more, how they crack between the valve seats for no reason, or the engine harness catches on fire for no reason.

I have never ever heard of either of these issues. The only issue they have is the stupid tick which is from the shitty lifters. Mine ticks. It has 195k miles on it, ive made probably 15-20 1000 mile road trips with it, it will go through dam near anything, its got a ton of room in it....and its never really givin me any problems. I did put KYB shocks on it, and poly swaybar bushings which helped the handling a ton. Ive maintained the crap out of mine also. New pumps, belts, regular oil changes, etc. etc. etc.

Wire harness catching fire and the valve seats cracking or the wire harness catching fire. NEVER heard or seen anything about this. Not on the forums, never seen one in a yard burnt, nothing.

id recommend a trooper to anyone. btw, dont get the dohc version. everything costs way more for replacement parts. dont know why, but it does.

That's because all the trucks prone to wiring fires are gone, or fixed, ten years ago.  Some small number of the fires were caused by leaky injectors, FYI, there are a couple TSB about it, but most would short the alternator without blowing a fuse (!?) and they'd go *poof*

As far as the heads, there are a lot more threads across the internet but this one merely has 20+ unique posters commenting on the problem... http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/isuzu/trooper/r44675/comments/

Let me guess, you guys mostly have the 2.3 and not the 2.6?
