Ebay T3/T4 turbo takes the family wagon to 12.994 @ 107.38 mph
« on: September 26, 2009, 04:22:38 AM »

IF I had a high revving engine?  Easy low 12's/high 11's.  It was ALWAYS (well, for 3rd and 4th) at about 5250/5500 rpm when the wagon would REALLY move.  But I shift at 6500 or sooner...

Anyway....

got 5-6 runs in....

13.6 @ 104.26 w/ 2.009 60'
13.4 @ 104.89 w/1.993 60'
Turned the boost up 1 psi
13.5 @ 106 w/ 2.082 60'
13.7 @ 106 w/ 2.2 60' bleah
13.9 @ 107 w/ 2.?? 60'
and finally the last run of the night....

60'     1.946
1/8    8.381
mph  86.15
1/4   12.994
mph  107.38

STOKED!!!!!!!!!

Were you bogging out of the hole?  Then upped the revs on the last run?

The clutch (I think..) was skipping on launch.  Either that or wheel hop.

My stock revlimit is 6750ish....

Oh ok so you still piggy back off the standard ecu. have you thought about using an early wrx or sti(93-96) ECU  then you have the rev limit at 7600rpm. Im dont no what there worth over there but there worth not much over here.

Lost a piston today, so the only vids I can make is of broken ringland.....

Better pistons going in.  Mahle suck.

It was totally reliable.  I, me, myself, was a bad tuner most likely.

I have a plx R-500 which has a knock sensor input built in.  But I was running a 1 wire knock sensor versus the 2 wire needed.

I blew most likely due to agressive timing.

Rebuilding with WISECO pistons, hopefully higher compression so i won't have to go to such high boost levels for the same power.  And spool quicker.  And have some torque down low....

low comp=less volotile motor...  It don't matter how strong pistons are abnormal combustion will break stuff...

low compression for the win. look at all the vitara pistons in the d's running 7.X:1 compression.

high compression is overrated. Low comp is where it's at. Just for shits and giggles, if you had 4000:1 compression and enough octane, you could achieve about 97% adiabatic efficiency. In which case almost no energy would be going out the exhaust or cooling system, and you could never spool a turbo. Now consider the opposite, anitlag...

As for compression....

Subarus suck, plain and simple, at low comp.  They don't spool woth shit, nor run for shit, at low compression...  FOR ME.  They can make great power though, but for putt putting, I am not happy.

That aside, I busted #2 and #4.  Replacing with Wiseco and thinner head gaskets to bring the compreesion ratio up hopefully to about 8.5 -8.7 from 8.2-8.4....

Maybe driving this weedend?

Running again.

Turns out I cracked ALL FOUR pistons!

Using Wiseco this time.

Runs well so far.

Dude how many pistons have you gone through? It seems like every other thread is "replaced pistons" followed by "oh wait, there was more broken ones"

Sounds like you needed a little more compression, now go add some timing in too

Yeah I break em.   ;D

But now I finally have some I really am going to have to TRY to break!

I installed some new heads with oversized valves on this build.   Now my old tune is LEAN!  I am guessing they flow alot better and so am adding in more fuel to bring the AFRs down.  What was 11.5-1 is now 13.5-1 at the same tune....

I'm with you on this. Is it a tuning thing? or what up with that?

I didn't think it was that hard to tune a suby to run 12s

I didn't think it was that hard to tune a suby to run 12s

when it's running the platform/chassis he is, it is

Its not hard to run 12's with that chassis, its very similar to the 93-96 WRX. I was running a 12.8 in my 1995 wrx wagon and all my parts were factory (cast pistons) apart from the front mount.

You should definatly change ecu's for a better red line. Is this engine hi comp? I dont think it will make fuck all differance in spool, its the stupid long exhaust manifold.

Ehhhhh

got issues.

Not sure what....

Old tune > new motor, but new motor< running right on boost.  >:(

Fingers crossed on mechanical/vac lines.

You shouldn't crack ringlands on a forged piston, the only time I've seen that the ring end gap wasn't correct.  Mahle's a good piston, total WTF moment here.

If you were closer I'd offer to do all the wiring to upgrade you to an early WRX ECU, those things are one of the nicest things about those cars.  Awesome piece of hardware.

All 4 pistons?  One would be acceptable... shit happens.  Two would be a pretty strange.  Three would be a hell of a coincidence.  But 4?  Madness.

On a forged piston, should NOT happen.  That's like a forged rod breaking across the beam.
