My Minibike Rebuild Thread
« on: March 12, 2009, 09:43:25 PM »

This is my thread on my minibike rebuild.  I found out its a 1970 Rupp Roadster.  Its apparently worth something so I'm going to restore it.  I'm hoping in the end I can look as cool as Jim Carey in Dumb and Dumber.   :?:  Here's how I found it in a field:

Its current condition:

This thing's got a pretty cool torque converter setup on it.  Its kinda like a lockup clutch:

After sandblasting:

I wetsanded the outside cover and scraped the stickers.  Mother's Back to Black is fucking awesome for getting black plastic to look good again.  Before:

After:

Just started getting into the motor.  Nothing too exciting but I don't think these 4hp Tecumseh like boost or any performance parts from what I hear.   :-\  I hoping when its all done I can sell it to RickP.  :?: That is all.

Should I keep the original colors?  I'm not getting anything chromed so chances are they are going to be black.  The original frame color is Chevy hugger orange. What do you think?

Save the stickers too if at all possible. Collectors go apeshit for original stickers.

I heard these motors don't take shit for power and this motor is apparently valueable.  Looks like your normal lawn mower motor to me  :-\

Update:  Since it doesn't run, chrome it.   O0  I was originally just going to paint all the chrome parts but I gave it a shot to polish them up:

Some simple green, rubbing compound and chrome polish you get:

I fucked up and first tried to get all the rust off with a green pad and now its all faded.   >:(  Anyone know if I can fix the scratches now in the chrome?  I tried rubbing compound and no luck.  You can see the difference in the finish between the two.  Luckily I only fucked up the back fender:

As you can see they are not perfect but I think good enough not to paint.  Here's where we sit today:

There might be a big payday at the end of all this.  :noel: I got excited after watching some ebay auctions

$710.00 and its the shittier model:

$1200.00 and its the base model:
