More questions about vans.
« on: October 05, 2009, 06:46:05 PM »

Need to know what to do for the full size chevy conversion vans EFI.

Piggy back?

Moates has some kind of stand alone?

Want to tune it for silly mileage.

+1 maybe. They are cheap and will work, but can be a pain in the ass too.

I don't think you can get "silly" mileage, maybe a slight increase though. Let us know if it was worth your effort.

What year is it?  The OBD1 stuff is cake to tune and cheap to get into.  Simple simple simple.

If OBD2 I may/may not be able to help depending on what direction i go with the gear.  I'm leaning towards a Moates Roadrunner/TunerCATS OBD2 which allows me to reflash all pre-CAN LSx engines and some misc stuff without paying a $100 license fee on every car, but leaves much of the Vortec stuff unavailable.

Did you really put JD's game on the same par as Kain?  :?:

Van's are awesome for getting laid in. Isn't cramped like damn cars, you can stretch out and put on some tunes and drive anywhere you want  :noel:

My dad owned a 82 dodge van for 25+ years. He bought the industrial one without back side windows. he took a sawzall and installed windows in it himself.

Kind of helps to know what year, so we know what EFI system you are dealing with.

TBI stuff has the nice option of running the EBL system.

http://www.dynamicefi.com/EBL_Flash.php

As JD already said, the OBD1 stuff is dirt cheap to get into, but if you are getting an OBD1 G van (87-95), then it will be TBI as there were no other options for them.

No one uses tunercats, something about it sucking ass and never being updated, but 100 license fee on all the other shit sucks donkey dick

I was thinking about a G Van, tbi isn't that bad is it?

What should I be looking for, 350's are good motors afaik so I was leaning toward a chebby.

I haven't actually got the van yet.

Silly to the tune of 25mpg would be fine.

Personal anecdotes as well as known problems with Dodge, Chevy, and Ford vans would be nice as well, I trust this forum much more than consumer reports.

Still looking at the consumer reports.

Also which is easiest to work on, might go look at an 89 E150 straight six ford van, did those come with the International motor?

Shut up Johnny, I haven't had the misfortune of working on a chebby van but I have had to do injector seals on a suburban, shit's weak.

If there is anything that's a better alternative let me know. If I get a chevy I'm going to fix all the common 350 shit anyway, valve cover gaskets, leakdown for valve seals, plugs, and listening for that high stall whine the transmissions make before they eat it.

The pre-OBD2 Ford truck EFI is a bit wierd to deal with.  Converting to MAF/Mustang ECU would be most expedient.  I loooooove 94-04 Ford ECUs.

OBD1 GM stuff is luscious chocolate cake drizzled in strawberries and naked cheerleaders.  OBD2 GM is $100 per car license fees and meh.

There are no real Dodge solutions until the 96, then they have limited support for some cars/trucks.  It isn't until they got serious about making a decent product and made the SRT lineup that tuning stuff became available.  If you ditched this van idea and got a 03/04+ DCX I could maybe hook something wacky up?

I need something for touring.

As in packing in three cabinets, a drum set, three big heads, and then seating 5-7 people.

Not to mention sub $500 price range is optimum.

I've found G vans in that range.

$500 for the van estimate about $1000-1300 to fix shit, I was going to rebuild a motor for it myself, I'm just not sure how much of a bitch it is to pull it out from the bottom in a driveway.

I'll bring it to you JD if we come play Asheville.

Back last fall you could get a 97-00 van in great shape for $2000 because of what gas cost.

With how the economy is in FL, you should be able to find a similar deal.

I don't have $2000.

We'll keep our eyes peeled though. I have no problem fixing up an old van, regardless.

SBCs have not had chronic valve cover leaks since the inception of center bolt valve covers in 1987.  I have no idea what injector seals you have had to do on a Suburban since it is rare that TBI injector seals fail, and there aren't really injector seals to speak of on the CPI setups with the poppet valves.

The L05 is a dog at best that gets horrible mileage in stock form.  Dunno how much of that can be remedied with the suggestions above.

I am looking at mostly early-mid 80's vans, if I can find a G van that is OBD1.  The suburban had that 6.5 diesel with the hard lines to the injector around the back of the manifold, I think it was still TBI.

What would you suggest swapping into the van, I figured it would be a good idea to look for a new motor and rebuild it.

Also what should I do about old tired automatic transmissions, what are the common problems with them when neglected (duh). Or what needs to be replaced first.
