Possibly moving

We might be buying some land and building a house on it in the near future.. in a place without high speed internet.  How will I survive?  :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

Hughes net is mad gay.. we'll probably do dialup and hassle comcast until they man up.

Have fun with that. They'll just make you pay to bring the cable out

I install satellite TV and internet for a living right now, and sat internet is by far the worst thing ever invented. Better than dial-up, yes. Works 100% of the time, no. Super unreliable.

and I also want to build a house, possibly out in the country...but doing it where high speed internet isn't offered, turns me away.

from what im told by other people, comcast will string a cable anywhere you want. They will also charge you an assload for it. My recommendation, get your neighbors around to you to sign a "I want comcast" petition and take it to them. USUALLY if they can get a few people in the area who want the service, they will run a new line.

Moving closer to your workplace so that you can go from stale to moldy, are we?

I don't see what the big deal is, you spend every last 9-5 workday whoring the internet instead of working.  Isn't that enough interwebs for you?

thats cool, one of these days thats what i plan on. moving farther out where i have plenty of land for me to do whatever i want. but interent is almost always shitty when you move far out. id go with the dail up over hughes. hughes costs a lot more and always hear people saying its shitty. suppose to be 10 times faster or something but. id rather just pay hardly anything a month if its goign to be shitty internet. good luck with the land and make sure no ones takes off with your cows lol.

lol.

You can hassle Comcast all you want and they will gladly "forward it to their manager," but if it's not profitable they aren't going to do it.

Oddly, one of our rural areas has 20mbps internet, while the city only has shitty 8mbps.

My plan is to move back out to the country and I'd be satisfied with 3-5 acres.

Good luck.

Verizon...as in FiOS?  GOOD LUCK

My city has the 2nd largest research park in the world, and is a "tech" based city, yet we don't even have FiOS.

It may sound like it'd be profitable but fiber is not cheap.  When you factor in the labor costs as well as materials, your piddly $50-70 a month isn't shit, especially after subtracting their bandwidth costs.

Fast data always starts in the most densely populated areas and slowly leaks out to the suburbs, then the rural areas.

Do you remember the "omg you can get 1mbps cable interwebs?!!?" days?

If it were profitable, they'd have it done already ;)  Eventually it would be, but if it took 5-10 years just to recoup their costs, they'll stick with the larger cities where they can connect 10x as many people with the same amount of cable.  Sucks, but that's how it is...

3G is usable and I've got decent speeds tethered to my phone, but latency sucks.

If you do get the Iphone, the 3gs has internet teathering, which allows you to plug it up to your computer and have internet access. Problem fixed.  8)

I think America is one of the only high tech countries that is not strug with fiber.

I had fiber in Okinawa, and it was amazing. -and cheaper than my comcast internet
