pointers/tips on my tig welding (with pics)
« on: May 11, 2010, 12:58:50 AM »

Ok I havent done this very many times and the shielding gas was going out as I was finishing this piece. anyway, no excuses, Im new at it and want to get better...this was a piece of aluminized steel welding with a miller syncrowave 180sd on negative electrode and ~180amps, not sure exactly what amperage as i fluctuate the pedal.
I tried MIG welding, and I am really bad it, I like tig MUCH better... Im using the puretung rod (whatever came with the welder) and some filler that also came with the welder..
any input is appreciated

here are the pics

Flux core is what you need to start learning first before you move on.

OK couple of tips for ya.

First up, you mentioned the shielding gas was going out on these welds, well the gas is everything for a clean weld. Right now those welds look like the tungsten is contaminated or something. If the tip touches the weld while welding, it's contaminated and must be resharpened.

Second, switch from the pure tungsten to 2% it'll be better for that steel stuff. Usually you want to use pure on aluminum.

Third, aluminized steel doesn't weld that great to begin with, find some regular mild steel to practice on first. Also, don't try to weld tubing right off the bat, get some flat stock and try to run some consistent beads on that first.

Fourth, try to position your hand resting somewhere so the torch stays steady. If you're just holding it in your hand trying to freeweld your bead will be all over the place.

There ya go.

awesome thanks...

we have some other rods around, Ill read them and see what we have and put those in and see if it changes
i didnt know that if the tip touched i had to resharp it.. i do that sometimes and had no idea. good to know
is there a reason why tubing is bad to learn to weld on?
I try to keep my elbow against the table so that my hand is steady..so having my hand be steady would probably be better

yea, i have been welding in a t-shirt for years. i just dont weld too much in one sitting. i never weld enough to even get any sort of tan line at my sleeves.

tubing is tough to learn on cause the angle of the torch has to constantly change since the angle of what you are welding constantly changes. tig welding is 90%a(my own made up statistic) muscle memory. get the motion down on a flat plate where nothing changes, then move on to tubing. eliminate your variables and you will learn faster.

^^^ this, Ii stated doing plate and within hours i was able to atleast make a bead on pipe. Trust the guys when they say start on plate. It's way easier.

Also people tend to add filler to the mix to soon, you need to get the rhythm down with the torxh then add filler once you master torch movement.

what are your settings on your machine. It seems like your welding a little hot turn down the amps and learn to weld slow then speed it up. the key is learning to control the puddle. it took me about a month to lay down some nice weld and all i had is a smiley tig. now a day beads are beautiful. smiley tig with a gas lense welds come out nice. try to get a gas lense for your tig they improve the flow of the sheilding gas.

so find some good steel to weld. lower the heat. gas lense, thorated tungsten. clean the material your welding with wire wheel and acetone and weld should be golden.
