somethin we rigged up today to yank the valve springs from a gsr head, only to find out why no matter how many valve adjustments it had, it would still tick, springs are from exhaust side. valves are also hammered to death on the stem tips. compressor was made with flat bar and bar stock from home depot

yeah but it doesn't work on dohc zc motors or single cams. using a socket and extension works on all motors.

and you want to explain how you can put them back together with a socket?

Try working on a bseries vtec motor.. There is no room for anything, getting them out is easy, i used a socket and a hammer to punch loose the keepers, but putting the retainers back in is the tricky part.  you cna buy the honda tool for xxxxxx amount of money, or use this bad ass tool which took me about shit for time to install ALL my retainer.

I used the sears spring compressor and i spent about an hour grinding off parts that were hitting the head or wouldnt let it fit. Then i spent 2 hours getting ONE fucking spring/retainer back on the head.  Ordered this thing and had it done in less than 10 minutes and didnt break any spring doing so

or try and use that lever type on the head with it out of the car, I had to bolt the head to the work bench, but before that me and my friend stuggle to hold the head down, while installing crower dual springs and using the snap on one.
after seeing that video I am buying one, friend bought one on ebay for $25.

Yea i knew i was going to need a valve spring compressor, I forgot how much of a pita b sereis vtec heads were, i got the craftsman compressor from sears(the small one) and it on fit in a few spots.  googled some stuff up and came across this.  Its damn near worth renting out to people.  saved hours of my time.  The kit even comes with the little flat head screwdriver with the magnetic end for the keepers

5 minutes?  you must have triple jointed spaghetti like fingers, but yes it does work well.  I bought the same one and it was well worth the ~60 I paid for it.  I think I have done about 5 sets of B VTAK sprin sets since then.

I did 1 set with a c clamp type compressor that I modified.  After that episode I wnet looking for a  better alternative.

i take one of the long nose vise-grips, clamp down on the edges of the retainer and then put a rag over the end and push down and get the collets out.
oh sometimes they fire off at the speed of sound so watch your eye(s), hotrex take notes.

doesnt't work so well for aftermarket springs. They do the job for weak sohc springs tho.

Also when you remove springs I like to use white cardboard under the head so you dont lose any keepers those little bastards are impossible to find if you lose them. The white makes them stand out nicely. This is if your using socket/hammer method.
