350 or Bust - Love me some D: Getting a tune
« on: March 15, 2009, 12:45:29 AM »

So all the real gangsters in the hood have themselves a '92 CX hatchback.  I myself, am as white as they come, so of course I have one too.

Starting things off with Chris' TB and spacer.  Stock vs. Aftermarket

Installed straight on a Z6 manifold

Spacer outlined and some die grinder action

The die grinder would start off like this

And then get filled on half the bit like this

I was getting really, really annoyed as patience isn't one of my strong suits.  So I called it a night and waited till the next day to continue.

This was about 15 minutes of work

So I never throw anything away and I remembered that I had some really used angle grinder discs in my box.  Turns out, the shield is really easy to remove and the disc reaches in over an inch on the manifold.

Now we're in business

Still going to need smoothed out, and the spacer will be blended into the manifold

Put your steady hands on and don't get in a big hurry.  Put some Barry White on the radio or something

Next is smoothing out with some oxide stones and maybe some more bits in the die grinder

I've got plenty to do, and I'll post up more pictures of the build as I see fit and as I have time.  I'm taking lots of pictures, so expect them in the thread.

Its the balla d setup. Im not sure how the manifold will perform with the little bit of work being done with not blending the whole plenum. I port the whole plenum and match into the runners.

I also port the whole runner and full cast removal

ISB from majestic.  A used 3-4 shift fork from Mista Bone.  LSD motorsports clutch, pp and flywheel are arriving today.  So not a whole lot.  Might have it running by this weekend.  Then a short break in period, then I'll be getting started on the manifold and what not.  Still need to order a few things like bov and interfooler.  I'll probably go CDM on those.

On a side note, should I make a new thread for my OBX LSD install or should I just throw it in here?

The burs for regular steel suck for alluminum. You need to sport for a good carbide alluminum bur like this one. (if you already knew that sorry, I thought you might and were just useing what you had) Concidering there is so much allimunum in the projects we do, it is a great investment. If only used for aluminum they don't really dull either. Soapy water sprayed on your work will also help a bunch in acheiving good cutting. It makes a bit of a mess but really aids in the work and really helps keep the bur from clogging.

I thought it might have something to do with it being alluminum.  Those bits are the cheap ones from harbor freight.  I'll have to look into that special aluminum bit.

thanks for the tip

Put some air tool oil or wd-40 on the bit, every so often as well, helps keep the aluminum from sticking.

uhh, yea.  AWESOME tip.  makes aluminum dissapear 10x faster, and it doesn't clog the bit up hardley at all as long as you keep it lubed up.  Spent the last two hours making the intake pretty with the die grinder.  Shit looks solid for my first port job.  going to hit it with some sandpaper rolls tomorrow and get it cleaned out.  shavings EVERYWHERE

pics later

After the die grinder was done

After 80 grit sandpaper roll action

After 120 grit

Final product

Really happy with how it turned out.  Ended up blending it in about 3 inches total.  Wish I had some deep throat bits that I could really get in there with but I'm making do with what I got.

Not bad for a first timer. Lots of cans of carb cleaner to clean up all the shavings. The spacer really is a nice guide to use when porting

Damn it.

Put my P4A transmission together with the OBX unit earlier today, RTVed it up and all.  Bench shifted like a beauty.  I've been working on the intake manifold and was looking for a tool and saw the damn magnet that goes in the bottom of the tranny.  I'm pissed.  I always get in a damn big hurry and take one step foward and two back.  Guess I'll wait 'till the RTV sets up so I can remove it easier tomorrow.
