Low Budget 2001 Real Homemade Turbo Mazda Protege

Low budget, ongoing build, jb weld, flux core madness, measure once cut three times, 10 lbs will turn you out.



Godspeed T25, Chopped stock manifold, cut up original exhaust for piping for manifold

I had the turbo, intercooler, and charge pipes laying around from another unfinished build from a few years ago.


I didn't have the right banjo style oil feed so I made a regular one work with an old brass fitting. stuffed it with jb weld and drilled out the center with the smallest drill bit i had to act as an oil restrictor.




I made the manifold too tall, but all the bolts to the manifold and turbo are easy to get to for fast servicing, so I'm not mad at it. I did need to cut the hood a little more.

Made downpipe using a Tundra tailpipe i had laying around


I cut 2 spark plug anti foulers in half and used them for oxygen sensor bungs.





I gave it a little rip down the street with no tune and regular gas. It felt sweet to drive a boosted car again. Just a little bit more work to call it done. A computer, spark plugs, blow off valve, probably some 3 inch piping to run a muffler.

Starter solenoid $27
Rear brake pads $25
T25 turbo flange $10
Oil resistant hose for drain $10

Low budget turbo install up to $356

Everything else was bartered, giving too, or just stuff I had laying around.

2001 mazda protege.  Originally paid $1500.  Drove for 2 years then traded my cousin for a brand new precision 6262 turbo.  He did nothing with the car so he gave it back to me as a gift.
Turbo, piping, oil lines, intercooler, used to be mine, I had traded my other cousin for a cherry picker and a floor jack. He was going to install on his scion tc.  He never did so he gave those items to me.

I'm still on a budget. I was able to get this far spending 20 to 40 dollars a week. I only worked on the car a couple of hours on Friday and a couple of hours on Sunday for about 2 months in my back yard.  I have a few more things left. Spark plugs, blow off valve, boost gauge, wideband,  3 inch exhaust with muffler, fuel pump and a fuel cut defender to take it to 15 lbs of boost and hopefully that's it. I don't know, I might come up with more.
