Seat reupholstery
« on: December 31, 2009, 11:03:37 PM »

So I was unaware that the CRX was a bastard as far as easy seat swaps go. Been keeping an eye out for a good pair for a decent price, but looks like people want gold bars for shit that is falling apart. Anyone here actually reupholstered their seats? If not anyone had any done at an upholstery shop? (price)

Most upholstery shops are proud of their "art" and charge accordingly.

I figured as much. Damn glorified seamstresses. I don't think it will be too hard, from what I've been reading it's basically making a pattern if yours are fairly intact enough (which mine are). Hardest part will be sewing them together in the right area.

yes, and its easier than you think.  just remove all the seat fabric.  examine the foam and see if you need to replace and renew any of that.  side bolsters will need it if its old.  make pattern from the original.  use new pattern to cuttout correct sizes of material to use.  black leather or urban cammo will do.  replace in the same order you dissasembled.  must have access to sewing machine.

can do it in just a few hours, and is cheap

I know there are companies that make new skins for seats, but I haven't been able to find any for older Honda's.

Kind of seems like they are missing out.

Thats not true. You're an ass hole.

If I wanted to do suede inserts without taking my seats apart, could I just use some spray adhesive and glue it on? Obviously the suede would be trimmed befor hand.

You'd end up with stiff inserts with edges that constatnly delaminate and want to rip off/stick to your sunday best. Inserts have to be inserted properly - sewn in.

the key to this is you have to take it off, remove the stitches, make a pattern, and then cut out new fabric and get it stitched accordingly. then, roll it on and then steam clean it to shrink it.

There are people on the crx site that love this one; http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HONDA-CRX-SI-JDM-SEAT-COVER-FOR-VTEC-SIR-1988-91_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem414b1ada5eQQitemZ280432925278QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

I like those better than the pleather ones.

I could do without the logo on the pleather ones, but they are still pretty cool since clean stock seats are impossible to find.

Yeah I don't like any of the eBay seat covers. I could do without the CRX and VTEC logo. Also not a fan of the red stitching.

My inserts are fine, in great condition. The only bad part is the bolster is starting to split and the left hip foam seems to be worn out. I found some fabric that I think semi resembles the OEM fabric.

Going to just keep my eye out for a seat(s) that are in bad condition on the cheap to snatch up and practice on.

Yeah that's what I figured. Would take the old ones off and make a pattern, then trace where the seams are on the new fabric with some chalk so you know where they connect together/shape. I know they use steam to tighten up vinyl, but what about fabric?

But not only do I need the covers for my seats I also need the foam padding. Ive found covers that weren't half bad but Ive never found any of the foam padding.

Make your own foam padding, that how the shops do it. It can't be that hard to cut and trim it down.

I just talked to my kid (she makes some of her own clothes) and she says it's no problem.  Now my biggest concern is finding period-correct classic Si fabric.

BTW, foam and foam adhesive is easy to come by at fabric shops.  There is/used to be a place in town called Foam & Fabric.

Tip

When you are shaping your new foam padding, use an electric knife like you use on a ham or a turkey.

Steamers dont shrink material. they use the steam to relax the material and smooth out wrinkles. Also when shapeing your foam use a electric carving knife like mentioned, then a angle grinder with 80 or 40 grit to get the final shape.

My first CRX had mint seats, but the accident warped the fuck outta the driver seat.

Doug, make some, sell them with fresh foam inserts, and I'll test them out for you.

My driver side, door side bolster is also fucked, which seems to be one of the things to expect from a CRX along with the fucked up driver door lever thingy and cracked climate control.
