Conversion Harbor Freight Flux Core AC to DC
« on: March 07, 2016, 01:34:30 PM »

Looking at converting my Harbor Freight Flux Core welder (free from DasPoop) from AC to DC.

Looking at the videos:

https://youtu.be/Lq0nUFDTLAo

So looking at my list of parts needed:
1x 27000uF 50V Electrolytic Capacitor United (may go with 2) ($20usd/ea)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/121822635649?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

1x MDS150A 3-Phase Diode Bridge Rectifier 150A Amp 1600V CE Certification ($23usd)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/151063306876?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Or
1x Amico SQL 100A Amp 1000V 3 Phase Diode Metal Case Bridge Rectifier TS ($10usd)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/231390123491?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

8g wire and connectors

Question:
Are there better choices of these parts for the money?
Anyone do this conversion? and what experiences did you have?
Will this conversion be good with sheet metal work after I'm done?

For all the trouble id just get a decent lotus mig. Ive had one for 3 years with no problems and think it was around $450, the wire feed on the harbor freight stuff sucks, i used one for Almost 10 years and even the china lincoln (lotus) is wolds above it

The HF flux core Free-fifty-Free, so I if I can throw <$50 at it and work, then it be worth it.

Later when I can find the cash I'll get a real mig welder.  :noel:

What ever happened with this?

Got it done couple of months ago and it welds decent.

Going to experiment with stainless flux core on my exhaust for the latest Twincharge project.

I'll post pict if my welding isn't too embarrassing  :noel:
