Title: My car: rx7.
Post by: oinesra on August 04, 2009, 06:07:53 PM
Basic Homemade turbo setup.

Random Schwitzer turbo that is one of the biggest t3s i have ever seen. Ebay manifold and wastegate, Home Depot oil return line and front lip(not fully bolted on in pic.) JB weld putty on the charge pipe with crescent wrench flared ends. Down pipe is  flex pipe welded to the hat of a civic brake rotor, which is the same bolt pattern as a 4 bolt down pipe  :-*.  And insted of an intercooler I am running a cooling mist setup with an m3 preturbo and m5 after. I dont feel like proof reading this so fuck off.

My car, depot lip not bolted on.

The fact that they use a fucking flapper door maf is a problem, but other than that it had no issues but I fucked something up. I decided to up the boost. so i put a reuseable paperclip on the wastegate line and upped the boost to 15psi. It ran like a bat out of hell, but I belive I broke a side or corner seal.

not a bad run on this motor thow. its been 5 yearsof beating  and 3 chassies to finally let loose. Even thow it runs like shit, i still daily the bitch

lol I want to see this. I never put 1+1 together, but sure as shit, the t3 turbine is a 4x100 bolt pattern. Too bad the cheap ones are cast iron, work-hardened, and heat-cycled a billion times.

Not trying to call you out or anything here but what injectors are you using and how the hell did you not blow that thing up over 4 psi?

I've heard of people running tII motors on their n/a ecu's and vice versa but damn.

Ah, anyway that's cool.

I spy a 10ae next to the wagon?

I can't believe that's it.

Didn't touch the fuel at all........

Is this running off an n/a ecu or a TII ecu and afm with TII boost sensor?

Timing retarded via clocking the cas?

Any problems at the 3800rpm secondary crossover?  When are you hitting full boost?  Probably just off idle!?

Your setup blows my mind.  Like, just the fact it works and has been holding up.

for the longest time i was using  stock n/a ecu/AFM/pressure sensor/injectors and injecting 90% rubbing alcohol.

now im using all Tii stuff and injection 20% nitromethane rc fuel.

Timing is full advance at the CAS because the motor is bridgeported and wont idle on stock ecu correctly with stock timing

no problem with staged injection, cross over is fine. And full boost is at 3500, but the turbo hotside is huge.

The only problem with useing N/A stuff to boos is the pressure sensor. It will flip out when you hit more than 1psi, so i just unplugged it.

Impossible. Everyone knows (or eats it up) that rotaries accellerate turbine shafts at 13.4x the normal rate of a piston engine. :mexi:

BTW I'm curious about the nitromethane fuel. You need a richer mixture due to nitro, get hotter burn temps, and 10-20% of the fuel is usually castor oil. Is it actually working well for you?

R/C fuel is retarded. its very expencive, it spoils extremeky quickly from moisture, UV light or being stored in heat & if you ever put enough of that shit in there to do anything itd bog down or blow up like a little bitch. any benifit you're getting is front the alcohol being sprayed out of the nozzle.

same goes for isopropyl alcohol.

spray ethyl alcohol like you're suppose to. itll work better & its infinately cheaper.

Works like a champ for me. Best thing I have used it 75/25 meth/water, but meth around here is like 15 a gallon. Plus with the rc fuel, I get cool blue and purple flames from under my car. That is usually enough to scare off the hondas.

I got an intercooler in the works so I can finally use the meth injection the way it was meant for.

Know what RC fuel (methanol) does when it spoils? It hydrates, as in absorbs water. In his application, it shouldn't matter much, since it's used mostly to cool the mixture a little than to be the main fuel source. Given most meth setups will be ~50/50, even severly degraded fuel will be fine. However I agree that most of it is overpriced. It's the lube content that would be the issue, although rotaries need all they can get for those seals.

im not trying to be an ass here, but ive got not only going on 20 years experiance working with R/C fuel; but we mix our own at our club.  i haven't had to buy 2-stroke R/C fuel in 3 years. here's my current stock, only the green cool-power is off the shelf fuel.

(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv414%2FToysrme%2F0822091713.jpg&hash=1e2281e3959ace895d302c26d397778a72e32e59)

ive been through about 5 gallons since this past last june. that's a fuckload. R/C fuel is so expencive because only two factories in the US currently have the OK from the fed government to sell nitro methane

AFA what happens to cars when you run it. I can tell you from first-hand experiance its nothing good. my dad had built a bradley GTII kit car in the 70s with a worked over 1800cc vw engine in it. by the time i was in jr high the choke was shot and if it sat any length of time you had to spray starter fluid down the carb. well guess what? no started fluid and me and my buddy wanted to drive it around abit so out came a spray bottle full of 35% cox fuel.

first time it fired it threw a spark plug out the fucking head.

flash forward to 3 years ago. im playing with the auxillary injector controller output on my SMT-6 in my v6 lexus. were doing some messing around to determine how far you can go on various fuels in a gas engine on the highway (between bigminham & gadsden on I59) we had a 3 gallon supply, a pair of 550cc injectors @ around 80psi. once it had ran for a min you could run that engine peachy fine spraying diesel in it and it would gain 4mpg+ on the highway. (by the time we got passed the first 20 miles on the highway the bitch would run a good 2-3 minutes after cutting it off too) kerosene would run OK, but was fairly dirty and produced some carbon in the intake tract (likely atomization problems)

straight alcohol fuels sucked dick VS petroleum. R/C fuel wouldn't run worth a fucking shit (tried FAI (0%) 5% 10% 15%). overheating was common after the first few minutes so was bogging upon any kind of accelleration.

the first time we went out and tried to transition into using alot of R/C fuel the oil turned into sludge in the manifolds, it froze the EGR valve, clogged the throttle body vac switching passages, made a mess on the ACIS flap(varriable intake manifold) throttle blade & clogged the ISC. found oil in the AFMs bypass channel...

the conclusion we found was that it took minimal effort to get maximal gains by leaning the car via the o2 sensors until it was pulling timing out, then adding diesel back into it until it quit. no smoke, cruised like a champ and gained an easy couple of mpg. by the end of that & aero improvements we had the car doing no LESS than 31mpg on the highway and the combined mileage on it was nearly 30. (this on a car that never would do better than 18/24)

so im telling you via real experiance... if you put enough R/C fuel into an engine to do a shit, you're going to run into problems.

leave R/C fuel for engines that can burn it and have their oil feed from the fuel supply and run as a glow motor.

Get some vids of this thing.

I bet it sounds insane.

Is it a full bridge or just bridged aux ports?

You have plenty of room to rock a v mount if you wanted to.  Remove the shroud, get an e fan from the junkyard and cut some vents in your hood like this [[[.   It's ghetto but it works and still keeps you stealth.

It is was only half bridged, so just the secondary and auxiliary ports were bridged.  But I grew tired of fighting with it to start because of the rear rotor being messed up, so I just swapped in a junkyard motor until I can rebuild the other one.

This  'new' motor is pretty solid but the oil control rings seem to be going. It smokes a lot on the first crank up of the day. And obviously its a LOT slower, but I will just up the boost I guess.

I don't plan on using an electric fan any time soon. I just don't think that are as reliable or work as well as a clutch fan. I have used them in the past but they never cool as well as the stocker. And I already got the front mount worked out in my head, I just have to stop being lazy and do it.

Also, wile the motor was out I said fuck it and made a 3in downpipe with and adapter to the stock exhaust, cat and all...

I will see about getting a video of it with open down pipe though.

And I guess, thanks, JD?

Well, I got tired of the rivrts poping out from the lip every time it scraped something. And I didn't feel like redoing all of them with washers on the back, so I just got a lip from a early model s13. With about 15 mins. With the heat gun it bolted up like stock.

i run stock topmount but i inject copious amounts of fluids before the turbo and thus cooling it.

also, that charge pipe looks like this. if you knew any better, youd ditch that stock inlet tube to the TB, and get the tmic modified to exit the air just like the air intakes.

I take it you took basic physics in high school?  You do realize what happens when you pass excessive water in mist form through a condenser right?  Food for thought.

Well, if you must know. I never intended to use this thing. I painted it pink and bolted it on.  It is growing on me thow.

I don't even have a vented hood, and ill be god damnd if im going to cut up a mint aluminum hood. Deff. would if it was a steel hood.

But after looking at the intercooler, I might get the core boxxed in and make it into an air to water unit.

And yes, it is the owners 90% of the time.

Sir, you can run that top mount all you want, your custom silicon hose makes up for it.  :noel:

do explain. last time i took physics was back in 2004.

Same thing that happens anytime you cool off water droplets.  Their tendency to "hold together" with each other increases dramatically.  Suddenly, that fine water mist you injected into your hot compressed air charge becomes puddles in your intercooler or your intake.  Ever see what happens to a hydrolocked cylinder/rotor/anything?  Water doesnt compress.

Has your car actually ran with this setup?  How LONG has it ran this way?  I hope also you are injecting more than just water...

The real RFLs are okay-ish if you mount them in a cool dry place and lube them every other oil change.  Most "RFL" I see these days aren't real.

Mind, I wouldn't buy an RFL if I needed a BOV, but if I already had one I'd work with it.

Finally got a day off with decent weather. Got the charge pipes ran and the pink top mount ran up front.

Now, I have ridden in cars with RFLs, and herd them when they drove by. Yes they were loud, but Jesus Christ, this one is obserd. The first few times it blew off, it sounded like you would expect from a RFL. But on a second gear pull, 10 psi, 7900rpm shift, this fucking thing sounded like a Tie-Fighter zooming passed me. A lady that was walking her dog actually jumpped back when it went of.

I have a feeling that I will be bombarded by civics trying to race me.

i doubt you will have any real competition from any civics in town. a stock rx7 should be able to spank 90% of the civics that look your way

I turned into the 50 percent of the turbo loving lot that believes bovs are stupid......

I'm stupid so i suppose it's whatever.

I thought for a minute that you had a t70 on your car....you just happened to be selling one on BrotaryHaterClub a few months ago.....

I did a quick edit on my post.

Let it be known i'll be installing a gt3582 on my whip.  Full ching chong apex seal busting dont give a fuck if it breaks shit.  As long as Rene Franco is able to stand behind the stuff he sells, i'll buy it and do my best to make it work.  Lol.

What are you gonna do when the broken apex seals take out the turbine wheel on your faggot gt35 that cant be rebuilt? Throw more money at it like the rest of the rotards?

ah... you assume this happens. with stock apex seals its rare, however carbon seals destroy everything.

Again, kain proves he dosen't know what he is talking about. If anything, carbon apex seals would do the least damage.

I was never selling a t70 anywhere. I was selling the turbo kit off my car, but driving a n/a car is fucking lame, so I put it back on.

Thats why you get rotory aviation seals and they just bend in submission and loose compression.

It's non-ball bearing, faggot.

RA and stock seals ftw.  Superhard race seals are for RACE TEAMS.

RA seals period are the shit.  The apex/side and rubber seals are awesome.  Hopefully that's what my buddy is rebuilding his fd with if he can every take time off of work.

There's a long list of things that cause rotary death.

You can have a nice, high powered, RELIABLE rotary engine but you need to tune it properly and run MORE fuel than you THINK you need....which pretty much throws my whole plan to keep the gas mileage somewhat decent (for a rotary) out the fucking window.  Since i'm stuck with my spinning triangles (i'm not getting rid of my rx7, sorry) i figured i'd educate myself in what it takes to keep them from blowing up while making some decent numbers.

My friend's fd died due to too much boost and not enough fuel.  Some sort of solenoid problem with the stock twins or it being off tuned for how cold it was outside.  I dont remember exactly.

What i'm getting at is you match the turbo and boost to your fuel and motor and make sure your tune is perfect as well as monitoring and datalogging everything.  Air intake temerature played a role in the failure of my friend's car.  Shit it can happen to any engine but tuning and balance is everything.  Safely on my stock doweled block i'm looking at 350 max using only an aftermarket bad ass oil pan to aid in keeping the engine plates from shifting.  I'm still trying to decided what management i want to go with (power fc or greddy emanage ultimate i guess) and what injectors i'll need to keep a rich tune and low egt's.....  I picked the turbo for it's fast spool and response as well as exhaust flow working out well with stock exhaust sleeves/ports.  It wont choke the engine up and can make 400hp easy at 15 psi spooling at around 3000 rpm.  Not that i'm after that but the turbo just fits the job and i like the fact i can change housings and wheels as i please with ease because of how much support the journal bearing gt's have and after seeing the dyno sheets on some third and second gens i can't argue with it's performance.

I figure n/a shortblocks are cheap enough to really not give a damn about losing a seal or a housing so i've made up  my mind to stick with it regardless of what my friends or some people on the internet say about the rotary.  They aren't fuel efficient but are very boost efficient and are reliable with the right modifications.    Most of my reliability mods are underway now.  Clutch, driveline, cooling, cdi ignition, stri gauges, wideband.....  I've had to cut back on smoking, eating out, partying and buying beer on the regular but it's worth it.

Sixports are where its at.

I have used rotary aviation, atkins and stock. For a long term motor, mazda 3 piece is the way to go. For high boost, I would say aviation seals, but they beat the shit out of the housings, but are cheap.

For a daily that you want to make power, mazda two piece seals are the way to go.

A sixport motor with ported middle plate and exhaust is all you need for 350.

I wouldn't bother with pinning and oil pan braces untill you are stepping into the high 400hp range.

I have yet to blow up a 13b that was built with new seals. All the junk bin motors let go within a year though.

Do you mean mazda 3mm or mazda 3 piece.  My engine is using 2pc seals from pineapple iirc.   I'm not cracking the engine open unless i have to.  Seriously.  If it works out and makes 300+ i'm happy.  If it grenades or something else fucks up it wont be a surprise but i'm hoping everything will be ok.  I have a while before all the parts are gathered up but i did get a good deal on the turbo, wastegate and manifold....  Ching chong cheap.  I really dont care if it holds up or not.  Like someone else said, i love pissing money away.    JIc coilovers and a-tech wheels bn body kit, re-amemiya 2 way lsd.....$2000 rebuild on the engine.......   Way over $7k invested in the shitbox as it is in less than 2 years.

Post it on rx7club and link the topic on here!

As far as how i invested in my car, i built it backwards i guess.  I dont regret it.  I'm having fun with it and it doesn't seem like a chore to me to work on it.  Shopping and gathering research is a chore though....  The actual work doesn't bother me at all.

Back to the vent in your hood and more pics of the car and non-vomit inducing photoshopped porn.
