Sure can't. Especially not in Ohio.

If the vehicle is 30+ years old, you can own it in America.

There seem to be a lot up with bad engines and not many above 100k.

How are the 99-04 grand cherokee's with the 4.7?

4.7...

Uh, I wouldn't bother.

Zing!

4.7 is leaps and bounds better than the 4.0

you are crazy. the 4.7 fucking sucks. poor mileage, crappy power.

Yeah back in the days of the 318 or 360 possibly but the 4.7 was fail.

4.7 = junk. v8 fuel mileage, 6 cyl power
4.0/4.2 = win    bulletproof. plenty of low end torque, damn great engine.

XJ good jeep, cheaper, leafs in the rear
WJ/ZJ also good jeep, a little more comfy, crappy selectrac/quadratrac t cases, coils in rear

if you plan on modding, XJ all the way. For a comfy highway vehicle that sees occasional off road, ZJ/WJ will do just fine.

Heres a buddies grand (at .40)
6" lift , 33"s, rock sliders, ARB bumper, and a 231 t case

Start of jfk from cherokee rock village

4.7 are junk flat out. Price the engines when you go to replace one nothing less than 1500 for a decent mileage (around 80,000) running one. They have major sludge building issues. 4.0 is way better!

Yeah so I'm going to look at 4.0 WJ's then.    How are XJ interiors?  The cabs look small from the outside and i'm about 6' exactly.

I'm 6' even and I fit in an XJ just fine with no issues. So long as your not a fatass...
The room between the 2 is actually pretty similar, a little more leg room in the rear in the grand's, but really not much difference in the front.

I'm sure you are tickling your tonsils on some jeep love but dont let the bullshit against the rovers turn you away. Find a NON-LEASED vehicle and you will be fine. If they have been over-heated (from poor maint) run away. The 97-98 models are the trucks that have had some electric issues. As with anything that has had lack of maint, you will have problems.

Rovers have been proven time and time again. Go look on expedition websites. People hop in rovers, take them to remote places and put 3k+ miles on them at a time. Not saying a jeep wont do the same thing, but quit listening to the bullshit against rovers.

discoweb.org, expeditions west, expeditionportal.com and a few other websites are on the top of my head.

Another vehicle to look at, is Joeys favorite, the Isuzu trooper.

I really don't have too much of a problem believing them about rover issues.  In my search for them a good 30% were blown engine mechanics specials and sub 100k miles.if that's from negligent yuppie maintence or a flawed engine design I can't say.  I'm sure like with anything they'll be good with maintence, but I'm busy with work and school and don't have time to sort issues out in my apartment complex parking lot.

Its not that rovers arent capable its just that they are far over priced for what they are.  Jeeps are more bang for your buck period.

when rover started putting ford engines in their junk they were 200% better.

the new ones are baller. i like them. not for off roading though.

driving 3000 miles on dirt is something a civic could do. those "expeditions" are mostly lame.

If this is the case then you dont need anything that is gonna require anything more than midas can't handle. If you are gonna buy anything over 100k, other than a stupid 1991 rusted out honda civic, be prepared for it to nickle and dime you to death. It comes with the territory.

I live in N. Indiana and have found many rovers for the $2-3k range, all in great shape. Hell, you can go to a buy here pay here dealer and get one for $4k. For $5k, you can find them ready to tackle just about anything in this country.  Had I not spent $2k on a stupid camera, id be driving one right now. The fact is, 90% of the rovers out there are off lease vehicles that have not been maintained. You find a one or two owner rover, or a rover that can prove its maintenance history, I wouldn't think twice about not buying it.

And your right johnny. All of them were piles of shit, and id take a civic on a 10 day all primitive trip any day of the week. Your idea of an adventure is going out to a mud hole, cracking a few beers and seeing how many times you can run through the fucker before the water is all gone. Sounds like a great time.

I would love to do something like this before I die. Sadly enough, you are much closer than I am, and will settle for the mud hole and a beer.

Frank, I'm not buying an over 100k suv. I can fix anything but I dont have the down time to replace  an engine due to a design flaw working 7 days a week and taking 18 credit hours. Although I graduate in a few months, I still need a known reliable vehicle.

Either a used 4runner or 4.0 Jeep(anything), both will last a life time.

don't exaggerate the gas mileage. lucky to get 22 highway

Coming from the guy who got 72mpg in his 5.0l turbo mustang?

lol,

The 4.0l's do blow ass on fuel mileage though. My brother in-law commutes in a 4.7l v8 Grand cherokee and says he gets around 17mpg. Not that bad for what it is. The 4.0l has no balls for towing though

unless you are pulling heavy equipment or big trucks, it does good enough, just don't be stupid.  i towed a 86 nissan extended cab hard body 4x4 pickup on a like 17' trailer and it did just fine for the 80 miles i was pulling it.  maybe 5-6k lbs.  was going 40mph up a 9% grade for about a mile and a quarter but it got there.  shit was interesting comming back down without a trailer brake though

I think so, I used a Grand Cherokee 4.0l to tow my boat over the pass and it barely fucking made it. 25-30mph and getting passed by everything. I then used a 4.7l Grand Cherokee to tow over the pass another summer with an even heavier boat and it had no problem. Don't get me wrong, I think the 4.0l's are great engines and last forever, just would never use it for towing.

I've never used a 4.0 for anything more than a 4 wheeler and dirtbike. But I have used a 4.7 pulling a TJ and car trailer. It didn't like it one bit.

5.7 hemi > 4.7 > 4.0

The 5.7 might be an okay mid grade truck engine, but it's largely regarded as a piece of shit by the DCX community.
