i recently halfass tuned this guys car on crome. it drove decent but kept blowing off charge pipes so we stopped. since then he picked up an s300. i got started trying to tune it again with the s300 and it kept over heating while cruising. anyone had a problem like that before? the timing in vac has been left at stock gsr settings since he has a stock gsr other than rods and pistons. the turbine housing glows red just cruising. sounds like retarded timing, but he has checked the timing and says its the same as what the map reads at idle. normally i always check timing before starting a tune, but i didnt have a timing light with me, he said it was on and was dead set on tuning that day. i had him recheck it and he says its still on.

i dont see what could be different from the crome tune to hondata in vac.

a small update. i emailed him a new file with 20% more timing and he says its better. it runs a little better and doesnt get as hot. i am leaning towards cam timing being off, but it doesnt make sense that with a timing light the ignition timing at idle matches the timing in the map.

I would think exhaust cam off rather than inkake

This is a mechanical problem, not an engine management one.

thats what i am trying to explain to him, but he doesnt get it.

the reason i say intake cam being off is cause it would throw the distributor off. exhaust cam makes some sense as well though with the glowing turbine.

its just odd that we didnt have these problems with crome

Update,

Car drives nice with p28 and a Crome tune, switch to p72 and s300 and it drives shitty in vac and overheats. Same afr's and same timing map on both which is stock gsr in vac.

Boost is nice with both ecu's

No seriously all you did was swap ecus and programs and no mechanical changes right?

Didn't even open the hood. Just swapped ecu's and retuned. The only way I could make it run ok and not overheat was to add an assload of timing. When I say assload I mean like 50deg at 0 vac. On Crome it drives nice and doesn't overheat
