The "slop" I'm referring to is when the car is in gear, I can still move the shifter about 3-4" side to side. Tried the energy suspension bushings and Steel washers in the past which helped a little but meh... Any input as to which bushings/pieces would clean up the shifter slop the most?

new shift linkages, if the shifter replacement + new bushings doesnt do the trick it means the lower linkage connection at the tranny is just beat to shit (near #12)

Sounds like the joint on the change rod is as worn out as your mother's anus.
That is unless you are a savage that used a bolt instead of a roll pin to attach the change rod to the transmission gear selector shaft.

This looks interesting but retarded at the same time. Anyone know anything bout it?
-
I heard that the rcautoworks thing makes a world of difference but its really expensive, and i only heard about it on dseries.org and you know those guys would be banned for saying anything but the best about the sponsors. You could get a new bitchpin. That helped mine alot. Pr you can go the rhmt route and replace the bitchpin with a bolt and nut

wrap electrical tape around the red area.. ALOT of electrical tape to "build up" the piece so when the it meets the other metal piece there wont be any play.. idk how many layers of tape.. i forgot.. but mine shifts awesome because of this

for those here who like to weld, the joint is only $60 from Summit or Jegs.

But don't forget the rubber O-rings in the bottom of the shifter that died from exhaust heat.
Cure, new shifter with bearings in it, if that doesn't work then add the steering joint.
I plan on doing both to the CRX over the winter when it gets put into storage.

If you're a really cheap nignog, strip the chrome off a harbor freight 3/8" ratchet swivel adapter and weld it up. Cut a balloon or used condom, zip-tie it over the joint after filling with grease, profit.
Mcmaster.com has cheaper deals w/o boots if you don't mind sealing it yourself. Tape would even work.

i have a friend that makes me solid aluminum bushings for the swivel joint where it connects to the trans. completely eliminates shifter slop. anyone with a lathe can make them, i can get the measurements if youd like.

I have the same problem. When I'm in 1st gear, if I push to the right, you think I'm in 5th gear.
The problem, is 5 and 6 on the diagram on the bottom of the shifter. I tried to solve the problem with new o-rings on the sleeve, but still has a lot of play...
Mine is rusted to dead tho..
-
damn i just got the ES bushings and there is zero slop in my 91

yeah i expected the electrical tape to disintegrate from the heat and for it to come apart.. but its been like a year and nothings changed still feels like the day i did it..

The play is not cause by the red area... It would take a lot of play to move 3-4"...

You're right dog.

think about what would happened if you wrapped electrical tape around the red area then tightened down the shifter..
imagine it without tape.. then with tape..
im talking about a ball of tape.. then when you tighten everything up it will hold the shifter tightly against the car.. so there will be zero play
-
thats the most retarde thing ive ever heard. its the fuckin knuckle joint. theres nothing to debate here its a common problem on hondas.

Yeah, I can imagine it with and without, but the problem is not there and your take won't help.
I agree that the shifter will be tight on the car, but the rod isn't tight at the joint so it will have about the same play.
You're solution cure another problem.

mine has slop everywhere, 5-6 area where the washers and plastic pieces just fell apart, 12 at the rivetted knuckly, and I hastily threw a bolt to replace teh bitch pin one day in a hurry.
Its usually not in one place, the tolerance of each joint stacks so fixing just one will disappoint you.
I never checked the ball but i'm sure it has play too.
replace 5-6 shit with washers/bushings from scrounge bin to tighen it up, find an old farmer with an old brake shoe riveter to address #12, and put a new bitch pin/proper sized bolt in the tranny and be done.
Or drive my car for a week and be happy yours isn't that bad.

im liking the idea of the craftsman universal. might give it a shot

Those are the bushings inside the cable ends, but 88-00 doesn't have cables. IMO poly on the tranny-side of the stabilizer is more than enough.
I've also noticed some slop is from the shift forks - worn or bent. Some trannies are just junk.
Another reason I've seen is when some retard didn't use all the proper parts & metric bolt for the lever-to-linkage below. My EG went from sloppy as Mike's ex-wife to tight as a virgin just by swapping from a stock shifter+SAE bolt (4, 5, 15, 28 were all missing) to a skank2 using ebay sealed bearings. The only play now is in the worn universal joint.

Buk, are you missing #10 or what? All the shifters I've pulled apart had no slop between the lever's ball, that plastic bushing, or the linkage "cradle" it bolts into. I could imagine putting tape around #10, so the bushing presses on the ball a bit, but not using tape between the ball & bushing.
