So i went a grabbed the latest build of window 7 online and partitioned my drive to run both the new os and keep my current vista ultimate sp1. After having used vista home/personal(whatever it is) i can say that on a laptop with 4gb of ram and a dual core 2.2ghz processor the amount of use i could get out of the battery was considerably less then when i took my old copy of xp home and threw it on there. That also being compared to vista with it's "Power Saver mode" aka- zero backlight and cut processor power. I now have looked at windows 7 and i will agree that it has the same nice look that vista does but now with a quite useful dock at the bottom that didn't seem to clash with my normal computing habits, in fact i will go as far to say that i found the programs being left on the dock was actually more productive. The quickness in which this kernel is able to navigate is far superior to the original one that was tossed in vista. So because Spiker is going to hop in this thread i want to pose him a question. This is just a modified kernel of vista right? Also, i know that Microsoft is in it for the money just like every other business in the world(xenocron) but for such a large company to release such a shitty product that robs resources and is killer on laptops and their power sources, i almost feel like a copy of windows 7 or quite possible the sp2 of vista (although i am currently running the beta release) or following should have some modification on how the kernel behaves comparable to win 7. Either the fore mentioned or a nice little windows 7 disc offered to current owners of vista.
*Cliffs*
-Windows 7 is a refined kernel of vista
-I hope those boys in redmond are willing to fix their mistakes and make it up to their customer base with no cost upgrades to win 7
-
Dude plays with xbox's, your mother's overdeveloped clit, and media center. He doesn't know any of that shit.
-
Think of 7 as a super awesome non gay version of Vista. It'd be like reforming Richard Simmons into Chuck Norris.
I enjoyed it when I had it on my laptop, but I just can't let go of my XP :noel:
-
they took the vista kernel, tore it down, and literally rebuilt it. they just didnt take a car and strip it down to bare essentials. they took the engine and build a new frame and everything around it. kinda.
First of all, the way it manages processes is WAY different than in vista. in vista it loads them one at a time where as 7 lodas them all at once durring startup making it a whole bunch faster.
i could go on and on about it, but frankly, i wont. it works better than vista, and i seem to like it more than my xpsp3 build.
-
Vista is the Windows ME of Windows 7...
-
How does one get this Windows 7? Is the beta testing over?

You're going to have to explain that one to me, because it's impossible for a single core/CPU to load more than one thing at a time.
-
They use cpu cycle alternatively. It looks like they are running at the same time, but its not physicaly possible
We call that multitasking ;) Windows and linux use a system of priorities to know which code they will execute at first.
If they all have the same priority, they will load alternatively (first in first out I think) base on cpu cycle.
-
the memory management is exceptional
on startup my XP would use about 150mb less once both systems were tweaked to my needs
once i would load fallout 3 on both systems win7 uses 200mb less
load even more programs in the background and the gap gets bigger

Go to a torrent site and search "win 7 7068."

7 is sexy. Fuck Ubuntu
lol
-
1. Click hold title bar, shake to minimize all other windows
2. win + left/right to maximize a window to that side of the screen
3. Center click on icons in the task bar to open another instance
A few little nice features

Anyone know when build 7068 is set to nuke itself?

Anyone know when build 7068 is set to nuke itself?
August 1st is what I heard, but there's always a patch to fix that.
Public release candidate is supposed to be out within the next month.

Spiker told me he can hook up a legit copy, the day after it comes out for $20 more than MSRP. I'm all over that shit like white on rice.

i hate it when i cant tell if people are joking or not because i feel like there could be information that i am missing that could make a statement serious or a joke

yes, because we all use backtrack as an every day OS. RIGHT.
on a serious note, ive started my advanced unix/linux administration class. its getting pretty neat.

I have an AMD Athlon 2800+ 2.08 Ghz processor (754) laying around if anybody needs one cheap :noel:
-
I'm about to build a couple cheap up to date PCs. I need a tower for the workshop, would like solid performance but it'll be used for logging/geekery. I plan on getting serial/parallel cards for it as well as a cheap PCI GPIB card. The other one is a simple home entertainment/light duty game rig. Probably get a 22-32" TV/monitor that does 1080P, cheap but decent vid card that supports DX10.
Realistically, I'm super happy with the T8300 in my laptop, and the 4.1 Ghz watercooled P4 in my current desktop does really well for most stuff, so I think I'd be easy to please. I'm curious how the inexpensive AMDs stack up in terms of bang for the buck? My problem is I lack persective, and I know some of you guys fuck with different setups all the time just like I tune cars.
-
If you want to stick with an intel setup, this dual core is a GREAT bang for the buck:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116072 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116072)
3.3 ghz air cooled all day long for me. I play everything maxed out at 1680x1050 with a 4850 with not a single hiccup.

Best bang for buck - cheap quad core q6600 with decent aircooler overclocked to 3.2-3.6ghz $180 or less
8gb "performance" ddr2 ram for under $100, or just 8gb ram for around $50
any card from the radeon 4800 series, whatever is in your budget

Just as a frame of referrence, what do you play? I'm sure it exceeds whatever I'm into, but I'd like a frame of referrence.
-
I second the 4850, it's what I'm using.
You can find them for under $150 now and they will play anything you throw at it. Only game I can't play at 1920x1200 is Crysis on max settings, it'll only run about 10-20fps. FEAR 2 and COD5 WAW I've been able to play at 1920x1200 with max settings at a playable framerate without any problems.
Running a quad q6600 @ 3.6ghz overclocked on aircooling. OCZ Vendetta2 (and it's lookalike, forget the brand) are the best CPU air coolers according to the last reviews I've seen.
Dual core should be plenty if you just do normal apps and gaming. I only went with a quad because I do h.264 video encoding which will use all cores at 100%. Encoding at the stock 2.4ghz 2nd pass would only go 2-4fps, and at 3.6ghz would go 5-7fps. 12 hours to encode is a big difference compared to 18 hours at the stock speeds.
-
slickdeals.net, you can have a quad core, a 4870 and more gigs of ram than you need for <350$
just decide on a good mobo
-
The problem with spending the extra nickels for a Q6600 or the like means I'll want to overclock it, which means I have to get a better motherboard with more options which costs more. Meh.

True. I recommend the gigabyte boards. Asus are probably good as well, but I'm using a gigabyte now and know it has more options than I know what to do with. I got this board:
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=2919 (http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=2919)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128358 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128358)
$135 from newegg, $115 after MIR. Kinda pricey for a board but it has 8 x usb + 2 x usb headers, optical out, 8 x sata, raid support, 2 x pci-e 16x (not needed unless you'd run two vid cards), 3 x pci-e, 1 x pci, even IDE if you still use that crap, etc etc etc
They have cheaper boards that are just as good without all the extra ports and slots, but all the features needed for overclocking.
-

Recently, FEAR2. Have played Crysis, left4dead, etc etc. all at 1680*1050
-
Corsair PSUs are also top notch  I'm running the Corsair 750TX.
You can find SATA DVD burners for $10-20, so yeah definitely upgrade. IDE will clog up your case.
-
the overclocked 300$ core2duo rig i built for my bitch 2 years ago can probably eat half of your faggot machines alive

Not a $180 core 2 quad @ 3.6ghz :P
-
you dont count you know how to install a video card -_- and your not a virgin
-
Why would I want a DVD drive? I have one, it's never used.
-
well cdr/dvdr unless you have a 20gig flash drive laying around.
I have 8 gigs of flash drive in my hip pocket, 1.3 TB of USB harddrives, and www.homemadeturbo.net/upload/ (http://)
Should I buy a DVD drive and be like you?

Well, when I updated my BIOS I didn't choose to save the settings and lost what I had set for 3.6ghz. Had to start all over. Fortunately, I got a new high score:
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi284.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fll5%2FJ0r5h3r%2Foverclock.jpg&hash=8b5a388e85e61cf61136798803c8339bfa51e3ca)
Shitty cheap quad cores :P
Should probably get a better primary harddrive. This 5200rpm 500gb is hurting me...
-
I have another TB in the shitty OC'd P4. Actual HDs are decently fast.
PS - USB HDs are fast enough for WOW. :)

My harddrive is ranked 13 on their list. I have 4 x 1TB Western Digital WD1001FALS
-
I have an XP thumbdrive, yes.
-
If you're going to build a new comp and run a 32 bit os, you might as well not bother. It may save more resources but you're also capping your ram at slightly under 4 gigs.
It only has 3.25gb usable when I'm on the XP 32-bit partition. It'll vary slightly but yeah 32-bit FTL.
-
Just built my system around x-mass when new egg had some deals.
Asus m3a78 mobo 70$
2x2gb gskill 1066mhz ram 59$
Amd athlon 3.2ghz x2 94$
Evga 9600gt 80$
Does everything I demand of it and on water setup from my old build I have the 3.2@ 3.8ghz with idle Temp of 35c and load at 48c. Plays counterstrike source on max settin with many frames to spare along with crysis on I e step below max settings. For the money spent and the unlocked multiplier this chip makes a great buy.

I think they should have a "Gamer" release where its just the bare bone essentials - not like it would cost them anything to remove shit
-
I tried to install this shit, booted from dvd with 7068 release x64 bit. It won't let me extend/split my primary C: partition.
SO i booted back into vista, and tried to use "disk manager" to "shrink" my C: and it will only let me shrink 80 MB? WTF? And even if i try that it say's "access denied" .
JD! JORSCHER! BDV! wtf?
Could it be cause vista puts MFT and all that shit at the end of the drive or somethign? Its fully Defragged etc...
I have 140gb free on C: .
What do i do? Could it be Page filing shit?

You're asking for a LOT in that last one. MS isn't the fixer of problems, they're the creater of new broken shit.
Maybe this is how car companies should opperate, it seems to be successful. Instead of revising & improving the bad parts of their car lineup, they should create new models every 2 years. Don't bother to fix cars that blow up in flames or randomly drive off cliffs, just use new bright/happy paint colors. I know GM's already doing that, except for giving the cars new names.

you idiots that think microsoft makes bad shit are in for a suprise.
hey, why not try and code an operating system for an infinate number of hardware configurations and well see how good you do it.
god damnit you fucks are ignorant when you say "microsoft makes bad shit".
no, they dont. its the hardware vendors that screw up with the drivers for everything.

These are good points... Also add the fact that EVERY bug and EVERY problem has to be reviewed as a COST/BENEFIT before SPENDING MORE MONEY to fix ANYTHING... I bet a lot gets put on the back burner. Quite the dilemma when you're trying to make money :somb:

Don't hear that too often from a Linux user, but it's truth :P
One of the biggest issues with Vista is exactly what's listed above -- driver compatibility. From what I've read, MS was more than supportive to the vendors to get their hardware compatible with Vista, but the vendors weren't all willing to make their shit work. What does MS have to gain from a bad reputation and their OS not working? Nothing. Vendors have nothing to gain from their hardware not working on the newest OS, because the blame is going to be put on the OS and they've already sold their product.
Out of the box -- Windows has some damn good compatibility. You could argue OSX does, but that's simply because Apple limits the hardware it will run on. There's an infinite number of combinations of hardware in Windows machines. OSX -- you're pretty limited.
I've been fixing Windows machines for 3-4 years now, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. A vast majority of the problems are operator-created. I hear about how virus-prone and crash-tastic Windows is, yet oddly I've managed to stay virus-free after downloading terabytes of software/media across 95, 98, 2000, XP, Vista, and now Win7 without the aid of anti-virus software.

+1
although i am a linux user and a windows user, i still love both of the equally. linux has a certain place that windows doesnt and visa versa. they both have their fair share of problems, but because the user base of windows is SOOO fucking big, its the law of averages that it will fail one someones PC.

It's probably the case.

32 bit 7 runs significantly better on both PC and laptop I installed it on
I try the new betas on my virtual machine and none have made me want to upgrade from my 32bit 7022 =p
think im gonna hold out for the release version now, or just rock this till the wheels fall off :noel:
all the new 48/68/77/105 whatever junk has not made any improvements that I needed so I think im good

It's probably the case.
It probbly is. I wish i got a p182 instead but no the ricer in me wanted the 900 :somb:

That's actually the case I have ;)
Try uninstalling all the hardware you can then slowly install it back until you find out what the problem is.
You might wanna try downloading the video drivers from the manufacturer also. Win7 came with drivers from my card but the ones from ATI worked better. ATI already has Windows 7 drivers available.

He was a boy
She was a girl
Can i make it any more obvious
He was a punk
She did ballet
What more can i say
He wanted her
She'd never tell secretly she wanted him as well
But all of her friends
Stuck up their nose
They had a problem with his baggy clothes

Guess who she sees
Skater boy rockin up MTV
She calls up her friends
They already know
And they've all got
Tickets to see his show
She tags along
Stands in the crowd
Looks up at the man that she turned down

Well I got 7 to run better. I rest my bus speed back to default and it seems to run fine now just a little slow. Weird xp32 was running fine at 3.25ghz but 7 says "no! bsod"
