Title: Malichite Daily CRX
Post by: malichite on October 13, 2011, 03:27:36 PM
Current Project Cost $650

Car $$$Free$$$
Complete B18 with trans and HASport Mounts, shift linkage axles $500
Summit Paint Systems Red 1 Gallon $150ish

Well, as some of you may know, I have my first child on the way due here in a few months.  I have got rid of most of my big projects and am making room for one project.  Had a friend give me a CRX he picked up a long time ago as a project and never got anywhere with.  It is a 90 CRX HF with an SI interior in it.  No engine or trans in decent shape.  Here is where it is at so far.

Most of the body is pretty straight minus some small dings here and there.  The door sills, hatch surround and engine bay were painted black for some dumb reason and done very badly.  Got most of the engine bay striped of accessories and started sanding all of that down.

I then moved onto the drivers side door sill where I saw some cracks which I assumed were in the sheet metal.  Below you can see what I found when I started exploring.  The car looks like it was t boned lightly, but the repair was done horribly.  There was a 1/2 x 1/2 piece of oak strip that was used to establish a straight line and build from.

Once that was put in, it was filled with spray foam, cut down to shape and covered in 1/2 or more of bondo.  Can't belive someone actually drove the car like this.

Anyways, plan for the repair will be to cut the door section out of a good car.  I will then trim back the damage on this and jack the sill back out tell it is straight.  I am then going to weld a solid beam on the inside of the channel.  once that is done, I will replace the outside sheet metal.  Sad thing is my repair will probably take less time then the last "repair"

Got some more work done today.  Managed to get the door sill straightened out.  Used a hilift jack, braced up the passanger side door then placed another piece of steel on the inside of the drivers side sill and jacked away.  Once that was straight, cut the remainder of the damage away.  I then got a piece of .120 wall square tube and welded that inside.  Once that was done, I got a doner sill out of another project of mine and started fitting it in.  Finish wasn't perfect but once the trim is on, it should look pretty darn good.  At least it is all metal now.  Also patched up the antenna hole while I was at it.  Picture time.

Well, got the body work done on it today.  Isn't perfect, but not to shabby in my book.    Started getting the door sill primed also.  Hope to get all the door sills and hatch area primed and painted this week.  Once that is done, the body goes back together and I can squirt the rest of it.

I believe sanding if only done once you give up.  It seems to be never ending however I have not given up yet.  I have finished scraping the glue from the joints and have started welding the seems and filing them.  It is a rediculous amount of work that I will never do again but so far I am happy with it.  On to the pictures.

Well, my new daughter has been keeping me super busy, but I gota little bit done.  Got the rest of the un needed holes in the firewall filled, pulled all the front suspension off and got it painted.  Next step is to clea up the rear cross member and get that back up and in.  Just put a big order for parts in so I am waiting on those.  Will be doing all new bushings, ball joints, wheel bearings blah blah blah.  I did have my ARP wheel studs show up today though.  Will be putting those in as soon as the wheel bearings get here.

Got a lot done this weekend but not many pictures to show for it.  I got the engine cleaned of all of its road grim.  Still have a few small spots that need some work but pretty much ready to go.  Had to go scrounge a bunch of bolts from the junk yard.  Also had to gather a few missing trinkets (water necks, breather box...)  I also picked up a new t support and windage tray cowl.  Need to get those cleaned up and painted so they can go on.

I also got the bushings burned out of the control arms.  Got the spindles stripped down and a bunch of other parts sand blasted as well.  Will need to get a fresh coat of paint on all of those so I can start assembling the suspension again.  Have brand new wheel bearings sitting on the shelf.  The wrong bushings were sent so those will need to be exchanged.  Still need new ball joints before I can get it back on its wheels also.

Lastly I got the fuel system converted over to AN and got the bulkhead fitting installed so that is all ready to go.

Still waiting on a few parts but got some more done today.  Got some of my parts that I sand blasted all painted. Also spent some time cleaning out 20+ years of dirt from the wheel wells and got a fresh coat of undercoating put on.  Love having a giant box of clean shinny parts :)  It is going to be so nice to put everything together and have all new clean parts.

Got it running a couple weeks ago.  Wiring is just laying all over right now.  Wanted to make sure it all worked before I started cutting in.  Been busy with holiday and new born shit.  Hope to get back on it next week.  Have most the week off.  As far as remaining work, the outside of the car still needs paint, still need to assemble the front suspension.  Need to buy brakes for the front.  Not sure if I am going to go fastbrakes or just cobble some shit together, or go stock crx stuff.

Also ordered a Wier traction bar kit so I am hoping that will show up soon.  Depends on how fast canada post goes I guess.

Forgot.  I also need to figure out springs and shocks situation.  Thinking I might just go with the Tokico Blues and Tokico Springs for now.  Had them on an old hatch and they were pretty nice for a daily.  Will see.  Money is adding up quick and this  O0 is going broke!

Ex knuckles, mini cooper rotors, and legend calipers and brackets.

You have EX knuckles???  I just finished putting fresh ball joints and wheel bearings in the stockers.  Hmm, I should take a look at making my own brakets to adapt the legend calipers. I may look at doing the 03 CL calipers on.  Supposedly they fit the dx knuckles.

If ya find out for sure, post up I'm interested.  :noel:

On my '88 CRX Si can I put the mini cooper rotors and legend calipers? Or do I still need adapters?

Has to be the hubs that are for the 10.xx" rotors. Like ex/da/dc/eg....ect

As far as the CL calipers I have no idea

If you have 9.4" knuckles, you can use ITR/Legend calipers & brackets with 10.3" civic rotors.

I'd like to hear more about the mini cooper rotors tho.

Got some more work done over the last few days.  Finished up the engine wiring harness and got i all hooked up.  Hooked up a battery temporarily and she fired up first try so big win there.  Also started putting the interior together a little but it is hard to tell.  Slowly putting all the wiring back in place and fixing little bits here and there.  Also got the new heater core put in and all the blower assembly back in.  Lastly, got the new valve cover cleaned up and painted.  Next steps are to finish getting the dash put in.  Mount the steering rack, come up with some type of cooling system and final install suspension and brakes.  Lastly will be paint for the outside.

All wired up in running form.  Still need to make permanent grounds.

Ok, looking at springs and shocks now.  Tokico Blues and Tokico Springs, or Skank 2 Shocks and springs...probably not coil overs though.  This will be a daily so I want something comfy.  I know to tokicos are really nice, but may be willing to look at others.

Got some more time on it this weekend.  First time I did any welding in 6 months so my welds look like crap but they still hold.  Got the traction bar just about complete.  Also worked on making new mounts to get the 1/2 width radiator in.  Forgot to order jam nuts but those are on orders now.  Still have a few welds to finish up but pretty much ready to go.

Needed to make some new tabs to put the radiator isolators on.  Only sheet metal I had was this old computer so I just cut a chunk out of the case.

I might just have to nut up and spend the money ordering something online. There is no metal in my area to be found except the shitty Home Depot selection.

I have a JK bar on my turbo EF hatch, but the big block crx needs one and I figure ill put the weir kit on it

1.75" would be perfect cause that tubing is everywhere. I'm sure 1.5-2" are all plenty strong enough. I jack my car up with my JK bar and it doesn't look like it even flexes, I think that's 1.25" square tubing.

I used black iron pipe from home depo, it was $15 and SUPER thick! I can jack up the car from the middle of the tube and there is ZERO flex!

Well, been a while sense I posted up here.  Still slowly working on this pile.  Got some time in over the last two days to work on painting it.  Sprayed it with 3 coats of high build primer, wet sanded, and put on 4 coats of color.  Then started working on the doors and hatch. Will try to get paint on those tonight.  Here is where it sits so far.

Those came with it.  I have Kosie K1s for it (already on the front)  Just need to get a key to get the rears off and swapped out.  I fucking hate them too.

205 40 17 I think.  They are not mine.  I need to give them back to the guy I got the CRX from once I take them off.  I will let him know though.  I know he wants to sell the wheels.

Just drove this POS for the first time.  Only drove it about 5 feet but hey, thats progress.  Got the not charging issue and oil pressure issues figured out.  Need to hook up the fan and brakes and hopefully take it out for a ripper.

Ok, this piece of shit is finally on the road.  Made it to the dyno day and did Meh on the stock b18.  Only issue right now that is driving me crazy is a nasty vibration when I accelerate or turn one way.  Bushings, Ball joints, wheel bearings are all new.  Thinking it's the axles so I got to get up to ratcityrex to get them swapped out.  Hoping to work the rest of the bugs out over the next month, then it's time to start building a manifold..... :)

Kosi's look good. Come grab my lifetime receipt from the auto parts store and we will swap them out. Everyone around me has gotten free axles....lol. I have 3 different lifetime axle receipts. Hydro b series, cable b series, and cable d series.
