Malichite Daily CRX
« on: October 13, 2011, 03:27:36 PM »

Current Project Cost $650

Car $$$Free$$$
Complete B18 with trans and HASport Mounts, shift linkage axles $500
Summit Paint Systems Red 1 Gallon $150ish

Well, as some of you may know, I have my first child on the way due here in a few months.  I have got rid of most of my big projects and am making room for one project.  Had a friend give me a CRX he picked up a long time ago as a project and never got anywhere with.  It is a 90 CRX HF with an SI interior in it.  No engine or trans in decent shape.  Here is where it is at so far.

Most of the body is pretty straight minus some small dings here and there.  The door sills, hatch surround and engine bay were painted black for some dumb reason and done very badly.  Got most of the engine bay striped of accessories and started sanding all of that down.

I then moved onto the drivers side door sill where I saw some cracks which I assumed were in the sheet metal.  Below you can see what I found when I started exploring.  The car looks like it was t boned lightly, but the repair was done horribly.  There was a 1/2 x 1/2 piece of oak strip that was used to establish a straight line and build from.

Once that was put in, it was filled with spray foam, cut down to shape and covered in 1/2 or more of bondo.  Can't belive someone actually drove the car like this.

Anyways, plan for the repair will be to cut the door section out of a good car.  I will then trim back the damage on this and jack the sill back out tell it is straight.  I am then going to weld a solid beam on the inside of the channel.  once that is done, I will replace the outside sheet metal.  Sad thing is my repair will probably take less time then the last "repair"

Got some more work done today.  Managed to get the door sill straightened out.  Used a hilift jack, braced up the passanger side door then placed another piece of steel on the inside of the drivers side sill and jacked away.  Once that was straight, cut the remainder of the damage away.  I then got a piece of .120 wall square tube and welded that inside.  Once that was done, I got a doner sill out of another project of mine and started fitting it in.  Finish wasn't perfect but once the trim is on, it should look pretty darn good.  At least it is all metal now.  Also patched up the antenna hole while I was at it.  Picture time.

Well, got the body work done on it today.  Isn't perfect, but not to shabby in my book.    Started getting the door sill primed also.  Hope to get all the door sills and hatch area primed and painted this week.  Once that is done, the body goes back together and I can squirt the rest of it.

I believe sanding if only done once you give up.  It seems to be never ending however I have not given up yet.  I have finished scraping the glue from the joints and have started welding the seems and filing them.  It is a rediculous amount of work that I will never do again but so far I am happy with it.  On to the pictures.

Well, my new daughter has been keeping me super busy, but I gota little bit done.  Got the rest of the un needed holes in the firewall filled, pulled all the front suspension off and got it painted.  Next step is to clea up the rear cross member and get that back up and in.  Just put a big order for parts in so I am waiting on those.  Will be doing all new bushings, ball joints, wheel bearings blah blah blah.  I did have my ARP wheel studs show up today though.  Will be putting those in as soon as the wheel bearings get here.

Well, got a little bit of work done.  Got the rear cross member cleaned up and repainted.  Also got some more parts in the mail :)  Getting closer slowly.

Got a lot done this weekend but not many pictures to show for it.  I got the engine cleaned of all of its road grim.  Still have a few small spots that need some work but pretty much ready to go.  Had to go scrounge a bunch of bolts from the junk yard.  Also had to gather a few missing trinkets (water necks, breather box...)  I also picked up a new t support and windage tray cowl.  Need to get those cleaned up and painted so they can go on.

I also got the bushings burned out of the control arms.  Got the spindles stripped down and a bunch of other parts sand blasted as well.  Will need to get a fresh coat of paint on all of those so I can start assembling the suspension again.  Have brand new wheel bearings sitting on the shelf.  The wrong bushings were sent so those will need to be exchanged.  Still need new ball joints before I can get it back on its wheels also.

Lastly I got the fuel system converted over to AN and got the bulkhead fitting installed so that is all ready to go.

I hope this won't end up like the double-d buildathon. Looks promising so far.

Still waiting on a few parts but got some more done today.  Got some of my parts that I sand blasted all painted. Also spent some time cleaning out 20+ years of dirt from the wheel wells and got a fresh coat of undercoating put on.  Love having a giant box of clean shinny parts :)  It is going to be so nice to put everything together and have all new clean parts.

20+ years of dirt

All cleaned up

All Painted...That probably wont last long :(

Sandblasted parts

Painted Spindles and Dust shields

Big box of parts!  :)  Also have the painted shock forks and control arms in the box.

Resting for the night waiting for more parts.

Forgot to get pictures, but I did get a little bit of work done this weekend.  Being held up waiting for other parts to arrive, but I did get the knuckles all assembled with new wheel bearings, ARP wheel studs, and ball joints.  Small bit of progress but progress none the less.
