I'll make that bathtub for half that price if someone wants one. I can't touch that welding helmet price though.

Honestly, what's the cost in materials and approx time?

it would probably cost $2k in materials and take me 40-50 hours to make

How flexy would that be?  Also, have you seen some of the tables/stools on that site?  Functional, in your opinion?

Why wouldn't they be?

It's a strong material.  You can build tables/stools out of anything.

if it was laid on a foam core it can be more stiff than a conventional fiberglass or plastic tub.

the chairs that i saw could be made with a nomex core and be plenty strong enough.

Would definitely be a helluva lot cheaper/easier.  Actually has me tempted to make a rice coffee table.

I could see Dave buying this, he would never use it, but it would be something just to have.

Who the hell would pay $300 for a helmet that isn't auto darkening?

I'd happily pay $300 for it if there was no lens at all, but would accept my digital elite guts. Having a really light helmet helps make the 12+ hour shifts suck less. I have 3-4 16hr days of welding to do in a couple weeks, everything helps if you do this kind of shit.

I've been wondering whether carbon fiber will ever lose its appeal.  I'm not sure if it looks hot because it looks hot, because it's "rare," or a combination of both.

Either way, the CF furniture does look pretty sweet.  Digging the table :P

I'd be down for table. Not for $2500 though

What kind of hourly rate? I don't own a house so I have no use for a cf tub, but I am curious to know what it costs to build similar parts. How does CF do for resistance against oil?

The company I work for charges $85hr for composite repairs. We don't make things too often, but when we do, it's the same price.

What do you have in mind for the oil it would see? I have never seen any issues with oil. The planes we work on have carbon wings and the fuel tank is part of the wing. No bladders or anything, just a sealant poured in and the wing rotated through the course of a day.

That seems pretty reasonable to me. I was thinking about cutting fluid tanks for cnc machines, they rust/rot out all the time, I don't really have the problem because I run a really rich concentrate of water soluable oil, but some of the machines I work on I have to build new tanks every now and then because of the synthetic fluid they are using.

You could easily build a fiberglass tank for that and have no problems ever again.
