GENEVA (Reuters) - The World Health Organization said on Friday it was calling an emergency committee to advise whether outbreaks of swine flu in humans in the United States and Mexico constituted an international public health threat.
A deadly strain of swine flu never seen before has broken out in Mexico, killing as many as 60 people and raising fears of a possible spread across North America.
"WHO will convene, sometime in the very near future, an emergency committee under the International Health Regulations, which will consider whether or not this event constitutes a public health event of international concern," WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl told Reuters in Geneva.
Hartl also said that 12 of 18 samples taken from victims in Mexico showed the virus had a genetic structure identical to that of a swine flu virus found in California.
But more epidemiological information was needed before any change to the WHO's pandemic alert level, currently at '3' on a scale of 1 to 6, he said.
"The technical people in our Organization are saying that before we know how pandemic a virus can be, we need to know how efficiently it is transmitting and how widespread it is," Hartl said.

Now, five more cases have been seen -- all found via normal surveillance for seasonal influenza. None of the patients, whose symptoms closely resembled seasonal flu, had any direct contact with pigs.
"We believe at this point that human-to-human spread is occurring," Schuchat said. "That's unusual. We don't know yet how widely it is spreading ... We are also working with international partners to understand what is occurring in other parts of the world."
Two of the new cases were among 16-year-olds at the same school in San Antonio "and there's a father-daughter pair in California," Schuchat said. One of the boys whose cases was reported on Tuesday had flown to Dallas but the CDC has found no links to the other Texas cases.
STRANGE MIXTURE
Unusually, said the CDC's Nancy Cox, the viruses all appear to carry genes from swine flu, avian flu and human flu viruses from North America, Europe and Asia.
"We haven't seen this strain before, but we hadn't been looking as intensively as we have," Schuchat said. "It's very possible that this is something new that hasn't been happening before."
Surveillance for and scrutiny of influenza has been stepped up since 2003, when highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza reappeared in Asia. Experts fear this strain, or another strain, could spark a pandemic that could kill millions.

A new variant of H1N1 swine influenza has sickened at least seven patients in California and Texas, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta said yesterday. What you're missing is that there are ~60-80 suspected dead in the last two weeks, and by no means has this been contained. There are only 60 dead as of now. This number will rise. A pandemic is just an epidemic (a localized outbreak occurring at a rate above the background or normal rate of infection) occurring in multiple international jurisdictions. Until this moves definitively beyond Mexico, and right now it doesn't seem that the outbreak in the U.S. is spreading, then this remains an epidemic.
There were 20 dead just 3 days ago. The fact that a city of 20 million has shut down all schools is a pretty big indication of just how serious this is. That's 6.1 million students. Major events like concerts and particularly soccer games are now being played in empty stadiums.
Canada has already reported several sick travelers returning from Mexico. While it's unclear whether they are infected with the same virus, at least one case has been confirmed (in Ontario). When it comes to outbreaks of influenza, you should be happy at the hype, as it is definitely warranted.

1. Why is this flu killing mostly younger adults?
New and virulent strains of flu have the potential to cause a cytokine storm (an overreaction of the body's immune system). Younger adults have stronger immune systems and thus this overreaction can be deadly.
2. Will the seasonal vaccine protect against this strain of swine flu?
It is unlikely, if likely at all, that the seasonal vaccine will confer any protection. Despite that the seasonal vaccine has an H1N1 component, it appears that this strain is far too distant from that targeted by the seasonal vaccine. It will be a minimum of 3 months before a vaccine against this strain is widely available.
3. Is there treatment for this strain of swine flu?
Right now both Tamiflu (tablet) and Relenza (inhaled powder) are effective; however, there is a chance that the swine flu virus will mutate and become resistant.
4. Why is this called swine flu?
The particular virus normally infects pigs; however, if the pig virus and a human strain of influenza infect the same human cell, they can recombine making a virus capable of transmitting from human-to-human. It is very clear that human-to-human transmission is occurring now.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- "Confirming 40 cases of swine flu in the U.S., the Obama administration said Monday it was responding aggressively as if the outbreak would spread into a full pandemic. Officials urged Americans against most travel to Mexico as the virus that began there spread to the United States and beyond. President Barack Obama urged calm, saying there was reason for concern but not yet "a cause for alarm." But administration officials said they were already waging a vigorous campaign of prevention, unsure of the outbreak's severity or where it would show up next.
"We want to make sure that we have people where they need to be, equipment where it needs to be and, most of all, information shared at all levels," Janet Napolitano, head of the Homeland Security Department, told reporters."
The World Health Organization "now has us at a level 3" out of six levels of intensity, with six being a full pandemic, she said.
"Even if they raise the level today, our preparations are as if they had already been raised. We are proceeding as if we are preparing to a full pandemic," she said.

If H1N1 gets in an area where H5N1 is, a super influenza is a good possibility.
H1N1 is at 7% CFR in Mexico right now.
H5N1 is between 58-63% CFR depending on area.

Newberry Academy closed, students tested for swine flu (SC)

An independent Newberry County school could be closed a second day after 13 students and three chaperones returned from a trip to Cancun, Mexico with flu-like symptoms.
South Carolina’s state epidemiologist Jerry Gibson said this afternoon he believes it’s “fairly likely†that the suspected cases confirmed by test results as swine flu later today.

BOSTON -- A traveler aboard a Boston-bound plane from Cancun complained of flu-like symptoms while en route Monday.
US Airways flight 804 made a scheduled stop at Philadelphia at about 4 p.m., at which point, a 24-year-old woman was taken to a hospital. It was not known where the traveler is from.
Doctors and medical personnel from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention met the plane at Philadelphia International Airport to address the situation.
You don't even want to see the unconfirmed stuff like the family reports.

Having unprotected sex with someone who is infected, sharing needles with someone who is infected, in vitro from an infected mother, of rarely, through a blood infection. It's not exactly EASY to catch it, as the first two require the choice of participating in risky behavior that makes you risk yourself. In vitro is an unfortunate circumstance for the child. Through transmission has practically been eliminated. As you are well aware, scientists have been working on making a vaccine for years now.
This, on the other hand, can be caught by anybody, without participating in any type of risky behavior. You could catch it, your children could catch it. You can simply be in the room with someone who sneezes and catch it. You can even be in an area where someone sneezed and is no longer around and catch it.
Kind of a bit of difference there, isn't it?

This video is total bs, and is nothing but an attempt to prevent panic. People are screaming for the government to close the border. The government knows that if they did, it would absolutely devastate our economy.

First the headline. There are over 150 dead young people in Mexico. A 2 year old boy died in Texas. This is a lethal virus.
Dr. Tim Johnson is an elderly physician with a poor grasp of modern science. Sequencing a virus is not "an amazing feat of modern medicine", it is routine work done by low-level technicians. And the CDC is doing a poor job of it.
Dr. Johnson, like Laurie Garrett, is unable to make his own evaluation of the data and so is taking as Gospel the statements of the people he trusts. Statements that are deliberately misleading.
It is true that the elderly do not seem to be dying of this virus in large numbers, but that is cold comfort to the families of the 20 and 30 year olds who are. Recall that a young mother in critical condition had to have a C-section to save her baby.
The mother was in the US, BTW.

Im an auxiliary police officer in state college and when i was on hospital duty they were talking about how a couple kids on the penn state main campus got it... im sure there are a lot of cases that dont get reported. I only care if its deadly or not and I have no evidence yet that its deadlier than regular flu.
im still staying off campus unless I have to be there for this last week.

No one has died of this virus, any more than any classic flu patient, they have died of a respiratory infection that happens to anyone with fluid forming in their lungs (it's called pneumonia) regardless of whether or not they have swine flu. My mother's lower left lung was pushed against and partially collapsed after her nephrectomy, which resulted in fluid buildup and pneumonia. Did she die? No. Did she have swine flu? No. Would swine flu + pneumonia kill you? Well, for a 61 year old woman with cancer + recovering from a major surgery + weakened system from not eating healthy and chain smoking + pneumonia was pretty much taken care of by two days bed rest and some antibiotics and then they forced her to walk around the ward like any other nephrectomy patient. Swine flu ain't shit, bitches.
If we are poking fun, when don't we? I find the whole subject fascinating. I've talked to my kid about it. I'm curious if it'll mutate into the bad mojo this fall; that said there is zero guarantee any mutation will be any worse than the current strain - roll dice for weaker/same/stronger/irrelevant. That doesn't mean I'm going to waste my time fapping over minutae, nor does it mean that I think the information that I spread or encounter on this site is not appreciated just because there's some humor intermixed with it.

as stated in the video right now the virus is NOT a killer in its form RIGHT NOW. that is not to say that won't be a killer when it mutates.
most of the deaths that did come from the swine flu came from a village that had running water only 9 hours out of the day.
Infact i have heard that there have only been 7 "offical" deaths from the swine flu. the other 143 could not be confirmed or died from a DIFFERENT strain of the virus
