Title: faster or better way of lapping valves??
Post by: ryan1 on October 31, 2009, 05:01:53 PM: does anyone know a faster or better way of lapping valves than with a suction cup style of tool.
the cup keeps falling off/not sticking to well. i have seen people get away with hooking a drill up to the valve stem but i don't have enough room dohc mazda bp motor.
not going to the mach. shop either im on a budget, using grinding stones (old sckool way) the stones would interfer with the head.

Post by: patsmx5 on October 31, 2009, 05:04:40 PM: clean the valve, then put some oil on it and the cup, then when you stick it on there it won't fall off. Cut the tool in half and chuck it up in a drill.

yeah i did clean them, i will try a little oil and and cut the tool too.
have you done it this way?

make sure the valve stem is clean has no compound on it and has lots of lube so that you dont fuck up the guide.

i always used a piece of stiff vacuum hose, slid it on the end of the valve stem and slipped it over a piece of round rod that was in the drill.

ive only done it on lawn mowers but it only took me about 1 min to get each valve perfect. maybe a couple hundred revolutions of the valve was it.

using a hand tool to lap ( starting a fire with a stick style movements) it's kind of hard to be stedy and the suction cup want to fall off a lot.
this morning before football started i did the cut a old head bolt or anykind of bolt and put the suction cup on there then threw it in the drill, it worked very well and i could steady it with a finger from my left hand and the cup would not fall off as much and i kept the drill speed low and it work great.

Yup, if the bluing you put on the valve face doesn't go away immediately you might want to send the works off to the machine shop.
