making more room for a downpipe on a top mount
« on: January 29, 2010, 11:41:10 AM »

this is a manifold going on a 420a in a neon.  because the firewall is close, i wanted to keep lots of room for a downpipe as well as the charge pipe that runs under the oilpan :-X  the easy way to do a top mount for this engine would be to just make an upside down ramhorn... but doing it that way puts all the runners out to the sides of the collector and doesn't leave many options for the wastegate placement.  tucking the runners under the collector leaves you more room at the sides of the manifold for the downpipe and chargepiping as you can see in the last two pics.  sure it is going to be a real bitch to weld up, but making the downpipe is going to be a snap.

Wow, that looks bitchen as usual.  I fucking hate neons.

#1 sign of fail setup.  Turbo on back of engine.  Examples, VW, Neon, Caravans , K20...  See a pattern?

aaron i did a top mount dohc neon i just built an upside down ramhorn. the downpope was fucking cake IIRC. i put the wastegate out the side of the collector (exhuast housing side) with a 45 aiming up so there was no chance for boost creep. i wish i had pictures.

coil will stay.  there will be a small heat shield i guess.  final weld should be done this week once it is test fitted.

My brother-in-law had a srt4 and one of the first mods he did way buy a heat sheld plate for the coil pack. It was made from 1/8" alum, and just bolted under the coil and was shaped like an L and it ran the length of the valve cover

That thing is fucking compact for a topmount. Even my mini ramhorn is bigger lol How do you charge for a piece like that?

yeah, keeping it compact was the whole idea.  the charge pipe has to run down one side of it, and the downpipe/dump down the other side.  there is 10" of clearance to the firewall from the block.  in that space, there is about a 1/2" clearance from the cold side of the turbo to the firewall.  there is acutally, surprisingly, quite a bit of clearance from the runners to the block as well.

if i were to do this one again, it'd be $850.
