SEM for a BBC
« on: January 24, 2010, 10:25:44 PM »

So my buddy Luke, just got himself a complete 8.1L to put in his '72 Camaro, it is also getting a pair of HX-35's, a little small for this big of a motor, but it is more of a street car then a race car.  :D

So we have been discussing engine management options. I am hopping some of our tuners may have used some of these options and can give some pros and cons to each:

Three systems on the table right now, feel free to add if I missed an obvious choice:

-EFI Live, least expensive of the three, seems to be like Ectune of the Chev world.

-FAST XFI, Don't know anything about this, but Luke seems to have read good things about it.

-BS3, I know a number of guys on Yellow Bullet with some seriously quick cars running this, including the guy I met last year at the $10K street car shootout with this car:

It ran 7.79 @ 191 first pass out on the new turbo setup on low boost, with a pair of 91mm turbos.

XFI = BS3, for all intents and purposes.  Designed by the same guy, he just holds the copyright to the BS3 so he rakes in all the money.

I'd go with a stock ECU and 2/3 bar OS through EFI Live.  The BS3 car at the shop isn't as refined as it should be for a streetcar.

I know Luke for whatever reason is leaning more towards full standalone then EFI Live, is there another standalone he should look at?

Fuck if I know.  I've yet to find a standalone that worked half as well as the better OEM options - OBD1 Honda, OBD2 Ford, UpRev's ~'00+ Nissan stuff, etc.

Sorry kind of off topic, as I don't think Luke is considering Motec, but JD have you played with Motec before? If so thoughts and impressions?

JD is right on this if your going with the bs3 prepare to spend some time getting all the little quirks out of it. We spent some time getting idle and driveability right. Once it was all dialed in it works great but it took time.

The turbos  alone eat up 25% of the budget. Only way that cost $10k was if blow jobs and reach arounds count for payments.
