Carbed and boosted d-series Q's
« on: February 14, 2010, 06:28:43 AM »

ok so i have my flame suit on, im planning on building a turbo honda D16y4 with carbs. has anyone herd of anything similar being done? how hard would it be to achieve 300ish HP. im not new too cars, especially carbs (webbers have been part of my life for years) but am very new to honda's, and boost. i am an old hand with late muscle cars. the reason i ask is because my little sister has just bought the engine with the intention of going into a ed shell she got at a wrecker for $200 with no engine, tranny etc.

what carbs would be good for this build? (the honda engine is the part i don't know about)

are there any turbo's that would be good for this application?

is there anything like this around, or am i gonna have a nightmare figuring out all my own problems as being the first to try?

The only people I've met with carbed ed's are Tim Shoney n Bisi.  Tim runs at Maxton n Bonneville.  Bisi will tell you to buy aem stuff if you want to run boost.  Tim's car is n/a.

Tim's uses a single holley 2 barrel...  So he may be able to help you on the spark side of things.  Idk if he knows anything about webbers...

Here's where I'd go looking for blow through info:

there is an old ass book on turbos from the 70's

http://www.amazon.com/Turbochargers-HP49-Books-Spark-Ignition-Applications/dp/0895861356

also are you talking dcoe or regular webber, i could see a real advantage to running a blowthou dcoe setup. also ignition would be a real problem when trying to make close to the same hp as a fuel injected engine, all that slop will close the margins in pretty fast and getting ride of it may not be a streetable option.

and post some pornzzzz....

Vacuum advance/boost retard distributors make me nervous at 300 whp in a D16.  Their ignition timing requirements get a little odd.  250, maybe 275 whp, no problem.  300 = I'd pass.

I have zero love for carbs, but if you get a sealed enclosure for those Webers they should maintain a rock solid AFR, and take a lot less fucking around than an EFI car to achieve.

Post pictures of your car along with your n00b porn.

Can you shed some light on the subject, maybe do a writeup?

PM jilcrx on www.thezcr.com  He used to run a ZC that was carbed with his son for a while and has a solution for spark control on the carbed setups.

Noob thread required now.
