valve seat / engine machining nogs
« on: May 10, 2010, 10:30:47 PM »

Where can I find a holder for a 3 axis cnc mill to hold 3 angle cutter inserts like they use on a serdi etc? I really don't want to make one or cut the seats by hand. Also, what material are stock honda valve seats made out of? I believe they are hardened but have not had the time to confirm.

Unless you have a probe small enough to to find center off the I.D. of the guide this will be no faster/accurate than doing it on a manual mill.
Modern seat cutting machines use auto centering pilots to locate the cutters.
On a milling machine you can get everything you need from http://www.newayts.com.au/seatguiderest.htm, you put a pilot in the guide, dial in your center, than raise your Z axis and mount the cutter, make your cut,  rinse and repeat.

The only reason I am doing it on a cnc is that I have to machine the counter bores larger for the larger seats and I plan on clocking in the pilot to find the center of the seat and doing each seat individually just like you would on a manual. So I might as well cut the seats while its fixtured and being able to do all three seats at once would be nice, oh btw our manuals are trashed from special individuals over the years, thanks for the input

You are going to try and install the seats while the head is fixtured on the mill ???

Ah I see, well that should be accurate enough. Recording your X/Y positions to the tenth on your counter bore operation should be good enough to just run a program when you cut your seats.
Anyways those neway cutters are pretty cool, you can do multiple angles in one shot :noel:
