Detonation and good AFR's
« on: March 03, 2010, 01:36:58 PM »

So this question has risen to my attention as I was tuning my buddies turbo honda. I understand what detonation is. However what I want to know is, can you have detonation and still have good AFR's like 10.5:1 ?

Isn't 10.5 really low? i usually see 12's in boost.

you can always have detonation no matter the afr

afr depends on the power level your looking at

the normal nog setting and 10psi will turn ya out 11.8:1 is about ideal, then get as brave as you would like with the timing

Detonation is influenced by multiple factors such as combustion chamber size/shape, intake air temp, quality of fuel, plug heat range, etc.

Its good practice to read the plugs (and the top of the piston if possible) during and after tuning for signs of detonation and pre-ignition.

also getting to low with the timing will raise ET and exhaust valve temp and cause more problems. -1 deg per pound of boost has always been a good place to start for me, but most engines will want you to change it a little from there.
