d16y5 wont engage vtec
« on: February 16, 2010, 02:55:07 AM »

a friend of mine has a d16y5 that ever since he got a new delta 272 cam put in wont engage vtec. it feels like his car hits a wall at 3k rpms. we checked timing belt to make sure its not a few teeth off and replaced vtec sol. the only cel he threw was vtec pressure swith so he swapped that out as well but it still threw the code so we checked oil pressure and changed filter just to be sure. i have been looking at this car for a few days now and am completly stumped. im starting to think that it must have soemthing to do with his cam because i guess those motors run on 12 valves till 3k then the others open up but its like they all shut or something, like its not going into vtec at ALL.

any ideas?

oh and ive already tried to talk him into burning it

You say "like it's not going into vtec," you can't really feel a huge difference in a y5 when it switches over. I still run a stock cam though. Hook up a test light and make sure your vtec solenoid is working. Are you sure you are using a correct y5 cam?

yeah i know its not a huge difference but i was under the impression that that motor pretty much needed it to kick in to get to the higher revs. i dont know shit about this motor, never even knew honda made a roller rocker head till he was tellign me. he got the cam from delta and they said it was the right one, i was starting to think they gave him the wrong cam or soemthing.

pics of original cam and Delta cam.

cams for roller rockers have a distinct different cam profile.

You can rev to redline without vtec activated.

yeah it will rev normal with vtec unplugged. ill take a pic of both tonight if i go over to help him again. i was thinking about swapping the original cam back in too see if they screwed up because he said they guy at delta said that he had never seen a y5 cam before so i would assume that it was wrong and the problem only started after he put it in.
thanks for the help, ill post back up later.

told him we should swap back to his stock cam or at least pull the delta to see if its wrong, he said he thinks its somethign else because he called delta and they said it was right, of course their gonna say that. so im done working on the car, told him to take it to the honda dealership so they can rape him.

Disable the VTP in the code and see if it engages or not.

Y5 cams, being roller rocker, are unlike other cams.

It's probably just a missing battery cable. Make sure you have 2 of them, otherwise vtec suffers

Try putting 12v on the solenoid and see if it clicks, what's your oil pressure at 5500? Spedo working? Enough oil in car? Car warmed up?

I know exactly what you mean "hits a wall".  Mine bucked.  Unfortunately I am no help, because I never really dissected why my y5 did that EXACT same thing with the crower regrind.  I'm just here to tell you there's someone who feels your pain.

I had a sneaky suspicion, though.  With my cam, I told them to regrind the large intake lobes only, and leave the smaller intake lobe(if you can call it that) alone.  I *think* that with the difference in base circle diameters, the cam could not line up the vtec dowell.  I had a feeling that this was part of the problem.

Crower never did one of the y5's before either...  I tried to relay all the necessary info to them regarding anatomy of the rockers and such, but they ignored me.  I also take some blame, as I requested that they leave the base circle on the smaller intake lobe alone.

Crower thought the intake lobes were the exhaust lobes, and vice-versa...

ALSO...

Make sure yor base circle on the smaller intake lobe is SMALLER OR EQUAL TO the big intake lobe...

Then chop some longer "vtec dowells" so you can lock vtec ON.  Then see what the cam is all about.  I was too stubborn and wanted it all...  The mileage, the power, the glory...  Uhh...  Anyway, try that.  I wish I would have.  You could try too, since it's happened to you, dun dun dun nun nuh.
