I rode my former co workers versys today, the engine is smooth, reall smooth.  It doesn't have retarded speed but a fun bike, I'd still consider the 650r if I were you.

The 600 makes 148 to the wheels, and has had a bit more work done since in my absence.  Hope you run sub-1:19's at Summit Point...

You should get it to learn on and drive around for the summer then sell it in fall and save up till next spring to buy something nicer. If he is letting it go for a good price I'm sure you could make your money back out of it with only a few months use.
