Adding coolant to a fresh rebuild

What is the proper way to put coolant into a freshly assembled motor.

Once I put coolant in the radiator the thermostat is closed,so, the block has no coolant in it.

Has anyone added coolant or water to the engine before start up?

The thermostat should have a small hole in it so that as you pour water in the radiator, air can pass up through the block, and out of the little pin hole, through the upper radiator hose, and out of the radiator. It's best to lift the front end of the vehicle up so that the filler neck of the radiator is the highest point in the system, fill it till it's full, then come back 30 minutes later and top it off again. Then fire it up, radiator cap off, turn the heater on wide open to get coolant circulating through that (some cars coolant always goes through the heater core). Let it fully warm up, adding coolant when needed and varying the throttle from idle to 2500ish. Let it run for 20 minutes or so, then shut it down. When it's cold, add coolant, install cap, you're good.

i guess you forgot that there is a lower hose on the motor that goes to the water pump?
