noob quiestion on water flow direction....
« on: March 13, 2012, 10:31:28 AM »

So I'm getting ready to slap my water temp gauge in my car and I have one of the inline rad hose metal inserts that are tapped for a 1/8 female npt port for me to put my sending unit in. Now with that said I want to monitor the temp coming out of my engines going to my radiator. So I mount it in the top hose correct?

Yeap, keep in mind the temps will stay constant.

Until thermostat opens and temps spike up then taper.

Then thermostat closes and your back to constant temp.

So when you install this and see the above temps do not panic right off the bat.  :noel:

A lot of Hondas have that 180* hose from the IM nipple to the t-stat housing. It's right next to the heater core tubes. IIRC this usually bypasses the t-stat, so it will be one of the most consistent temps. The only better spot IMO is to tap into the head near the fan thermal switch.

The problem with that is i"m running a mechanical gauge, and I would need 2 1/4 barb fittings a 1/4 tee and a adapter up to 3/8 npt for this thing. By the time I put all that in the mix I don't think I will get a accurate reading as the water wont be running across the sensor. It will be running up to the t and dead ending into the sensor. I could be totally wrong, but thats just my thinking out loud, and I only really want to know where I'm at when cruising and while wot doing a pull as i don't want this bitch to get to hot.

i would drill and tap one of the block plugs (cyl no 3) or weld a fitting into it that will by far be the most accurate

If it wasn't in the car and running I would. But seeing as how this is still my dd, I cant have it down for mare that a afternoon, as I still need to drive it every day. Thats why my builds always take so long.

Then take a 2nd block plug, mod it, then swap it for your current plug the next day. As for the t-stat hose, the one I'm thinking of is at least 3/8" ID. I'm just curious why the gauge uses such a large fitting.

In any case, you'll have to watch your EMS and the gauge to see if it's off any. If you worry about it not reading fast enough, you have other issues. There should be enough thermal mass in the cooling system and engine block/head to not spike 40*F in 3 seconds.
