Campin
« on: April 30, 2009, 01:33:15 PM »

So im going campin this weekend at a place called Crabtree falls in VA.  we've been before its gonna be awesome untill i read the weather report.  Like 40% chance of morning showers Friday and Sat but naturally we are still going.

Anybody camped out in bad weather before?  they are calling for light T-showers so im not really thinking its gonna be hard core, just soggy.  Just wanna know teh best methods for staying dry, i got a good tent and even have a large tarp.

Find high sandy ground, level the sand, build a tent there, throw a blanket down for a floor and a towel on the sand to wipe your feet before you enter. Works if you're on an island anyway.

Ive always pitched the tent on top of a similar sized tarp, as the ground absorbs moisture, then tossed a tarp suspended over the tent.  You will remain dry in all but the deadliest tempest.

Living in Washington you have to deal with camping in the rain.  You will need:

1) Rain fly for your tent... very important.
2) Big ass tarp for table area
3) (optional) tarp for the fire area high enough so it doesn't melt
4) Lots of string/small rope to hold up your tarps
5) Booze.  This should actually be the first item.
6) Dry wood.

Fixed it for you Kenny.  If your drunk, you dont need to worry about staying dry or keeping warm.

make sure your tarp is 3-4 inches smaller then the floor of the tent, if not and you are sleeping on the ground you will find out quickly as to why

Just fold the edges and excess in under the tent.  No need to get it exactly right.  But you are correct, if this isnt done the lower tarp will collect water and do exactly what it was intended to prevent.

You can also dig out a trench around your tent to provide for runoff.

I could probably swing it if i had a good pack but hell i don't even have a jansport so Food Lion bag it is.  I travel rather light.  I use the box my sleeping bag came in and another box that's just a tad bigger than that one oh and a cooler.

Looks like rain as soon as i get there which will make setting up camp and finding dry wood interesting.  cant wait to eat a bunch of zoomers tomorrow. w00t.
