I do know that a newer engine in an older car is ok. Can't use an older engine in a newer car.

Tell him the last time I checked was a couple years ago, but the b20 is considered a light truck engine and will not pass smog legally in any car in california.
If the engine is JDM then it won't pass because of that too.

However, my buddy had a DA with b20 in it and he just took it to some shady looking smog shops and the guys either didn't know it wasn't the LS motor or they didn't care.

For more accurate info he can call the Smog Ref @  (800) 622-7733
This number used to put you in touch with people that knew all the rules, but all I can see online now is it's a number to call to make a reservation with the Ref

before you throw that bitch back in; i might like to mention that the smogs down here don't care at all about it.

a b20 block looks no different from a b18. the smog guys generally don't care about what engine you use. wait let me rephrase, they don't know the difference. serious shit, the only time some one says anything about it is when the b20 uses an obd2 valve cover and they notice the weird lines that don't match up with the obd1 intake manifold or they fail you because you used a breather thingy on the valve cover line.

personally i would just install an ugly ass obd1 valve cover assuming you have an obd1 intake and send it out for smog. they probably won't know the difference.

the b20 will pass b18 specs on smog.

if by some chance you fail the visual. it's okay just go to the next smog store that seems busy and they'll rush your shit out even quicker. I.E. not bother buy look at the engine code. if you still have fear. just dab some oil on the engine code and some dirt to cover the shit up. i don't know a single mechanic who would purposely touch grimy oil to look at an engine code. (i would know i work at a Major Repair facility which does Smog)

HOWEVER if you plan on getting your shit BAR'd which means to get a certification to state that your engine is permanently swapped with a different engine from another veichle. you would have to send that to the state referee board and they know their shit. you will not get a validation sticker through this means. as it is an illegal engine swap.

so geting a california sticker won't happen. but passing smog to register the bi annual thing is a very simple process.

edit: i want to mention one more thing
it's not like it's as bad as people say. just because you don't pass doesn't mean they'll give you a fine or impound it or anything. they just let you be on your way and not let the registration fly. that's all

B20: came from SUV class... not a valid or legal engine in a sedan/coupe.  CHP will send you to a REF who will make you swap it back.   there is no BAR label able to be obtained for that engine in that car.

sometimes your lucky and the smog tech doesnt see its the wrong engine;   hopefullt he .2 L of displacement doesnt show too bad on the emissions test.

your saving grace is the year of your integra... but they do get picky when the smog equipment doesnt match the emissions label under the hood.

I am getting sent to a STAR station... WTF is california doing?   I checked it on the BAR site the other day and I wasnt directed to a test only.

ugh.

i know it is late for a response as such but information is always good to spread around when the information is available.

a STAR station is a new thing that California is coming up with to deal with the new smog equipment.

Cliff notes: basically it's trying to ween off the shitty smog people from doing shit smog inspections. it is sort of a validation process regarding a process known as "Similar Vehicle Failure Rate (SVFR) and Follow-up Pass Rate (FPR)". there is statistic involved which i have hardly understand myself about but it's a new thing the EPA BAR is bringing up in the state of California.

it's kinda weird as Both the Smog Location and the smog technician has to be star certified in order to smog star vehicles. which the DMV is now sending people to go to as of January 1st. too many smog folk just keep aborting and retesting to pass as they see fit to pass or attempt to pass vehicles so they don't have to do it multiple times. the baddies tend to get really low grades and shit so they tend to pass cars they shouldn't pass or they over complicate the process that doesn't allow them to pass smog.

the star program is there to keep people who are doing the correct procedure of smogging in business and root out the people who statistically are doing it wrong out of the smog business. in fact, although not manditory it is pretty much required to sign up and participate in the star program or suffer going out of business not being able to work. it's kinda fucked up.  but there are some plus sides to this. it does help out with eliminating the difference between smog check station and gold shield/test only stations. originally if the dmv told you to go to a test only/gold shield. you would not be able to smog at a smog check station. but if you got a smog check station you could go to either location.

the difference is the facility originally is this: 1 place only does smog and nothing else(test only locations). the other location does smog and diagnostic repairs and such (smog check station)(pretty much every repair shop that is equipped with a smog machine)(i work as an adviser to this type of place).

with star smog you can decided to go to either location assuming they are star certified. so they would be no confusion. so if you brought your smog paper work to me and i see it's a test only. i wouldn't have to direct you out to the nearest location. (trust me an unbelievable amount of people complain about this shit.)

so basically if a smog guy that has good grades with the state. he can smog any car he wants to and also it's much easier to smog cars too. don't quote me but i think 2007 and newer cars no longer need to do the 15/25mph test anymore and stuff making it super super easy to do smog and still charge a butt load. so all it would need to do is a obd2 plugin check for cycles a quick sniffer test few minutes and shit and then done.

that's the jist of it.
