Incomplete B16 head, still usable?
« on: March 13, 2013, 10:53:49 AM »

I may have gotten shafted in a trade from years ago. I got a bare b16 head in the deal that has all of the cam caps except 2. Has anyone had any luck using caps from a different head, but match the locations, maybe run a brake hone through it? I'm hoping to pick up a crv very soon and kinda want to stick this head on the B20. Crv si? Lol.

I have heard several people having luck with this. also heard a couple seizing a cam.

had one kid telling me he would lightly torque a questionable cap, then giving it a little more after a couple miles till satisfied.

I just did the same thing.
The head was completely disassembled for cleaning, so I threw the cams and caps in and checked how freely it spun while I torqued the 'new' caps.  Everything was butter so I didnt' fuck with any sort of hone or anything.

I sold it to a kid that drives it every day, he even installed the cams bone dry without so much as leftover oil because it was run through my dishwasher.

Lol. I guess I'll get a hold of some caps and cams before actually getting valves an all that. If it doesn't work I'm just out what I spent on caps and can resell the cams.

How bare is this head?

It might not be worth buying all the pieces if its just a bare casting.
Took me a while to find caps for mine, took buying a complete head that had chewed up journals on the head side and parting it out myself. Only way it was even worth it is the guy threw in extras that were worth what I paid for the head.

It is bare. Needs valves, springs, retainers, valve cover, LMA's, etc.

I'm not in any massive hurry. I can just buy pieces here and there. I have VERY little into the head itself.

Agreed
I'd trade it to some dumbass kid on craigslist that thinks they'll save money picking up the pieces over time.
Oh wait...
