Throttle body on compressor inlet
« on: November 12, 2013, 02:56:26 PM »

For packaging and space reasons, I'm considering the idea of pretty much bolting a turbo right the the cylinder head intake ports on the motorcycle I will turbo one day. What are the odds of engine vacuum pulling oil out of the turbo at idle and cruise?

Odds are low if the turbo is good condition.  :noel:

Look at the WRC cars, they have TB before turbo and they are not always in boost.  :noel:

Yea, but I wouldn't be surprised if those turbos are rebuilt more often than I get gas. That's the only doubt I have using that as a convincing tool.

buy a liter bike, then don't worry about having to turbo it?

My intention isn't to have the fastest bike on the street. That shit got me in enough trouble 10 years ago. I just want to build a turbo bike.

Draw-through carb setups saw vacuum at the compressor, and the only real concerns are you can't use a BOV or intercooler. If it's fuel injected, the other unconfirmed concern of fuel washing out the bearings is null. You could conceivable also use a vacuum-rated aftercooler if injected, too.

Just keep in mind a throttle body of a given size will flow more air through it when it's pressurized. Oversize the fuck out of the TB if possible. IIRC an older turbo design with carbon seals will be more reliable, since they need less lube (IE can deal with fuel in the compressor) VS dynamic seals used in most modern turbos.

It's gonna run megasquirt so, fuel in the turbo is no concern. The bike is a 750 that revs to 10k. I was planning to run a Honda TB. It's like 3x the size of the compressor inlet. I'm not gonna bother with an intercooler for now. Maybe water/meth if I have room for a tank tucked somewhere

This may come in handy making a kit for your bike. http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/waterinjection.html
