weld rate question for all you weld nerds :-P
« on: May 28, 2009, 07:38:00 AM »

I have to put in a weld bid on a big tank requiring a bunch of bead on 7ga carbon steel with wire feed. How many IPM of bead is a reasonable amount?

what kind of welder are you using?
what welding process?
got a plan of what you are making?
IPM is inches / minute. that's how fast the wire runs/how many amps its using. price isn't based on that.

AFA IPM goes, if you can do it in spray and you're up for production welding... 600-700ipm is common for .35 wire in production.
Figure your cost/lbs of consumeables and depending on what process you are running you can find out the transfer rate of the metal into the weld. With the IPM of the process you can add 15-20% of that and get how much gas you're running.

There's the majority of your consumeable cost, not factoring machine wear.
Now find your labor. IPM is the actual "arc on" time. Figure double that for work time. x5 for production time (if you are making & cutting - torch time/consumeable is figured the same as arc time)
For general wire welding... $9-18/h depending on where you are and how good you are at wire welding. The vast majority of general stuff falling between 9-13/h for non-specialty wire work.

Id like to spray it but when I went there to look at it today they want to build a 42/24/3' tank with double wall out of 4/8' sheets. This thing would look like a quilt by the time I was done with it.

These people are idiots and I dont think I want to build their shit.

you should tell them that plywood comes in 4x8, metal comes as big as you fucking need it, on a really big truck.
