defective axles
« on: June 08, 2009, 06:09:59 PM »

both boots on my old driveshaft ripped, no clicking.
went to pep boys bought both driver and passenger side remanufactured axles.
Installed the new axles.
Now there's a thumping when accelerating and turning, i.e. pulling out of a parking space or making a u turn.

That's 99% sure a bad cv joint right?

Any idea how I can tell which axle is bad?

Jack up the car, turn the wheel, and run it in first with the brakes lightly on?

is it possible that I fucked up the cv joint during install?  I don't think I did anything out of the ordinary.  I used an impact gun on the hub nut, but I wouldn't expect that to fuck up the joint??

upon further inspection I think it might only be the passenger side, will try another cheapo axle tomorrow. Not happy about putting in shitty quality parts though. Whatever, I'll rebuild my oems on the side I guess.

Outer joints usually wont thump, but the tripod style inner joints will.  You can thank ford for that. Like Chris said, ching/chong/meow.

Your car is lowered, raise it back up and china axles won't do that.

Let me guess, your inner joints are now discolored from heat?

Yeah, I know people who've done the same.  My CRX, which was dropped maybe 1/4" below stock Si height, just vibrated the car under power and when braking.  HASport has/had a nice writeup about how imprecise chassis manifacture is and some cars do that when swapped, and to use 86-89 axle pieces in various configurations to remedy both rattle and popping out.  IIRC the shaft is shorter for axles that bind, and the inner joint helps with axles that pop out... but I could be wrong.  I only experienced it on my CRX, and going back to OEM axles that are abviously designed for more inner joint travel (or a shorter axle/diff joint design/etc?) fixed my problem.

Wierd shit happens sometimes, welcome to cars.

I think it was the tripot bearing on the right side.  It looked and felt awful wobbly when I had the car up on stands.  Anyhow I returned both axles to Pep boys, tried to pick up some boot kits, but no one stocks them.  Ended up with new GSP axles from Advance for $70 less.  We'll see how they do tomorrow.  Any tips for getting them seated in the diff?

Car is not lowered.

Update:

GSP axles are pretty good.  Boots had like 5? ribs on them vs the 3 ribbed pep boys/Fenco axles.  Axles also had the lil rubber damper discs, whereas the Fenco did not.  Oh yea, and they actually worked, are brand new, and are $70 a piece with no core charge.  Also, lifetime warrantee, vs the Fenco which only had warranty agains mfr defects.

Oddly enough these GSP clearly state made in China whereas Fenco claimed "product of USA".  I guess when they save on labor they can afford better parts and QC?
