porting H22/F20B head

I have quite a bit of porting experience in the domestic world. ive ported alot of sbc, bbc, and sbf heads but i have NO experience in the import world.

in the domestic world most of the heads responded the best to bowl work and de-shrouding the valves. also thinning the area around the stem yielded some gains.

what do these heads respond well to? i used to have access to a flow bench but now that access is gone.

while i have the head off i thought i would do some cleaning up and see if i can gain anything.

For a D head de-shrouding the valves, raising the roof, the casting marks inside the runners and thats about it. DONT touch the floor!

Also having a good ported intake mani and tb is a big plus. Send them to Chris M, he does a great good at porting them, also pick up one of his tb while your at it.

Your not going to see shit for gains on a head if the manifold/throttle body doesnt flow atleast equal to the head

if i ported the head i was planning on doing the intake also, and maybe have my throttle body bored too.

the car has an HX35 and i was thinking more if i could get more exhaust flow as opposed to intake, it would help spool.

i researched the topic of both head and intake porting, and most of it took me to H-T and they were vague at best.

on the intake, what is the best way to open it up? i have the IABs removed and should i cut the area to make one big area or 4 equally divided areas?

any links or information would be appreciated. thank you

Remove the plate completely and gut the plenum. Make 4 equally divided areas in the runners.

Oem honda throttle bodies can only be bored 4mm at the most which is jack shit for an h22

if you have ported all those heads you dont need advice Sir. You sound like you already know what to do so go do it.




What kind of tooling grinders do you use?Air or electric?  Rpm? Cartridge rolls brand? Finishing work? What final grit do you use? How do you finish your heads? What size cartridge rolls do you use? taper or straight?

What angle are you going to do your valve job at?

What kind of Carbide Burrs shapes do you own?

What length Mandrels do you have?

Stock intake mani. Removed center plate. Stock throttle body. Just cut the seats. My set up netted me 493 horse on a dyno jet. Tuned by Blundell. That stuff flows well already. That turbo will be fine. You sir are over reacting. And mine was on 12pounds creeping to 15 from having a small wastegate.

I never claimed to be an expert, don't know where that came from.

I have an assortment of carbide burrs and cartridge rolls, and an air grinder.

If I could afford a flowbench I would buy one, but not all of us have epic amounts of money at their disposal.....

The valve job is going to be performed by a machine shop, they are doing a 3 angle valve job.

I'm just going to clean up the roughness and blend the bowl a little bit, and Prolly remove the center plate and blend the runners. I don't really want to get too elaborate, but I figured if while I had the head off I could get a little gain I would be happy.

Also I beleive the f20b from the sir-t had a slightly larger Tb compared to the the H22, so that is kinda nice for me.

if it was an automatic f20b they come with sohc civic size throttle bodies


The f20b auto manifold is also a total piece of shit with a 57mm inlet compared to the 5 spd's 64mm inlet


the cams in the auto/5spd are the same


the 15 hp difference is the manifold/throttle body

It is the 5 speed motor, I have the bottom end, but the previous owner spun rod and #1 main. The t2t4 tranny was kept by previous owner and put in a civic hatch with turbo H22.

I thought the MT cars also had the type s cams? I'll measure them while they are out.

That is completely false.

Everyone thinks they're TypeS cams because they have the same blue tint.

All OBD2 DOHC VTEC h/f series had magnesium cams(the blue tint).
