Install XP via USB
« on: July 12, 2009, 07:54:28 AM »

Anyone ever done this?  Thinkpad X60, SanDisk Cruzer 4GB (currently with the U3 shit removed).  I've tried:

- USB Multiboot, didn't do anything
- GRUB via several different installs, BSOD
- reinstalled the U3 crap and ran Universal Customizer so it'd theoretically act like a virtual CDROM, but it did nothing of the sort.

I'm trying USB Multiboot again with a different flavor of Windows, but I'm not terribly hopeful.  Any advice?

Not sure if this is the same thing or not, but I have backtrack3 that boots from usb. I just mounted the .ISO too the usb Works fine as a bootable drive.

I have a feeling I am missing the point though.

i install every windows app including 7 from usb drive, have you used google sucka?
wizard homo you need to format it to ntfs, set as active and primary then mount it and make it bootable using the BOOTSECT.EXE/NT60 command in dos
good day you old faggot

ps this is all useless if you have a piece of shit and your usb drive does not show up in bios... its shows up fine on my 4 year old china laptop so you have no excuses outside of being old replaceable and generally full of hot air and semen

It's an X60, yuriney.

Google says that XP via thumb doesn't work, but Vista and 7 do.  I need a USB CD drive.

Thanks for being uninformed, though.

Again, you fail to understand.  I've been through that writeup, and others.  X60 is a special case.  I can thumb drive Vista or 7 onto it, but it does not take XP.  For XP I need a USB CD drive, and I can probably install over a network.

Niggery under the hood is right.  Lenovo support forums has a sticky about all the things that cause BSOD on X6 Thinkpads, some of it is quite assinine.  The Thinkwiki also has a list of known good and known bad models of thumbdrive to use on various models of Thinkpad.  Any of the boot disk sites tell you it's still beta technology and shit sometimes doesn't work as advertised.

The good news is that this laptop, wiped and unusable, is worth more than your BMW.  Thanks for playing.
