1959 Chevrolet Bel Air Vs. 2009 Chevrolet Malibu IIHS Offset

IIHS did it to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

I always laugh when people say "they don't build them like they used to" because they're more plastic than they used to be :P

Someone's comment:

Quote
They still build em' like we used to.. in China

ahahaha

both cars looked equally fucked
a crx could probably do better
granted the cabin is where all the "protection" is for

love all the rust that comes flying out of the bel air.

Which makes it a 100% fair comparison.

yea, I figured the Bel Air would have held together better than that given it was an honest comparison, good luck getting someone to give up a cherry one for a crash test

I think my old 85 caprice would've toasted that new malibu. I hit a deer in that thing, granted it was at a low mph, but it dented the bumper a tiny bit and got some deer hair in it, thats all that happened.

Eh, yes and no.  I'd certainly want to be in the newer vehicle due to crumple zones and safety gear, but I think the comparison was somewhat squewed.  If they'd used a 10 year older car it would have been a bit different, I think.

I'd like to see what th malibu did if the Bel Air were raised 6" so that there was direct frame to frame impact.

Eh, retards, something is going to absorb the impact, whether it's the car or your body...

A car surviving a crash with a "dented bumper" does not mean it's a safer car, think about it...

Personally, I prefer the car crush instead of me.  It's cheaper to replace the car.

You sure it's not brown paint...the color of the car?

Yes, it would have been better if they had some cars to test with that haven't suffered fatigue...

Here, some freshly built ones being tested

1960s Crash Tests

Ahhhh, the safety!

They don't build em like they used to!

I don't feel too comfortable in the CRX with the idiots on the road, but made it out the last one pretty well... 8)

Eh, the driver's compartment of the Bel air was pretty well destroyed.  I'd personally like to see what would happen if one of those vehicles had a 15degree angle on the other. You will never have a real world situation where both cars hit each other square on center.
