bolt flange to old manifold for welding?
« on: December 23, 2009, 04:20:19 PM »

say i dont have a spare head laying around to use as a jig or whatever for welding, would it make sense to bolt the new flange right to the old exhaust manifold facing eachother to keep shit straight while i weld it?  im planning on making a long log type manifold for an inline 6 but with 6 curved runners instead of a bunch of straight Ts

Go buy a run of 3 or 4" wide 1/2" plate. there has to be a metal supply or trailer repair shop close to you.

and then match up a gasket and drill away. the holes don't have to be perfect and you can use smaller diameter bolts then the holes in the flange sense it isn't a jig just a welding plate.

I bought some scrap 4" plate from the local trailer repair place and it was $30 ish for a 3" chunk.

It's not needed but i recommend that you bring it to a machine shop and have them toss it on there belt sander for a bit and smooth the plate out.
