computer gods shine your light on this idiot
« on: April 08, 2009, 11:28:58 PM »

ok my comp is basiclly a Rhmt DL and porn machine but also my only one with no money to buy a new system
i use
AVG free
AD aware
windows malicious program removal tool
windows defender

the comp
2800+ amd pros
120 gig HD
512 ram
the ram seems like it is getting over clocked somehow without me doing anything
task manager shows my PF usage is running about 680mb at idle and upwards of 1.1-1.4g when doing stuff

? how the fuck do i fix this issue or what can i do to repair/replace to make it right
$5 to the person that gives me the info that gets used to fix this problem

Drop ad aware and avg, get avast antivirus and hijackthis. malwarebytes seems to work well for some people. spybot search and destroy always worked for me, but i stopped using it a few years ago but am too tired atm to remember why.

look up how to increase your page file size.

i bet it's too small

No.

You want the page file to be a fixed size, hosted on a different drive than your Windows install.  Aim for a pagefile size 1.5 times the amount of RAM you have.

Why?  You make it too big and Windows can't manage it, it starts dumping into it and then your computer slows to a crawl.

3x i thought?

It uses 1-3x the size of your ram.  I have 8gb ram and an 8gb pagefile.  I've never been able to use more than 4gb, can't find enough shit to run at once.

I'm lost. What does changing the page file setting do? I've got 2gb or ram on my laptop..

Just let Windows manage it.  It knows what would be best for you.

Joseph, I have 6.5gb of ram free, what should I run?

I have to try hard to max the ram on my laptop, I can flat out disable the page on the last desktop I built... proper running comp + proper amount of ram = no sweat.

Op, run spybot search and destroy, update windows, defrag, ram defrag, google and run regclean.exe restart.

Last time I needed more than 2gb of ram, my PC was reconstructing a database with a couple million (yes) entries, each with a good bit of binary data in them. How the fuck do you fill 4gb? Is Vista really that bad?? Maybe I'm just not trying, I've never even seen >75% load on my Q6600. :-\

I always run about 1 QUARTER the PF as my memory. I get sick to death of winblows putting shit on my hard drive, especially if I leave it on overnight. I only have a pagefile because some apps require it. The reason you want it fixed is beacuse it can get defragmented when it increases/decreases, slowing it even more.

Back to the OP, 512kb is pretty small for today, thats the min I'll run XP with.

h.264 video encoding, x264.exe = 1.5-2.0GB
Firefox with shittons of tabs open = .5-1.0GB

There's 2-3GB :P

All my other apps and OS will add another .5-1.0GB.

And there you have it.

My Q6600 is at 100% load nearly 24x7.  Makes for a warm room.

Meh, btw Win7, and no Vista isn't that bad.
