RHMT car painting.... suggestions?
« on: March 12, 2012, 02:11:16 AM »

i know this has been covered with a variety of different ways. but im looking to spray a custom mixed OEM paint color to match existing paint on my car. if it matters, i will be painting a hood and both bumpers.

now i have already painted the hood and front bumper with this:

it works well for small jobs (lip, grill, bumper was almost pushing it), but sucked ass on the hood. just too big of an area to evenly spray with a small pattern.
reason for doing the bumper again would be. idk? i fucked something up, paint isnt sticking well? and is chipping/pealing on the molding edges... probably worth its own post?

so i had some buddies over checking the CRX out/trouble shooting some shit. and one kinda threw out a comment about using a Wagner Power painter!?!?!? he suggested it would have a bigger spray pattern. has its own air supply.

anyone have some experience with something like this with automotive paint?

any other suggestions?

it should be pretty obvious at this point that i DO NOT HAVE AN AIR COMPRESSOR! and i have no plans on getting one. i rent a place, they are noisy, out of budget, etc.

I would think automotive paint would be too harsh for the wagner. I had good luck spraying thinned out epoxy enamal out of a siphon feed gun but thats not here nor there.

The latex it's designed for is much thicker than most automotive paint IIRC. Thinner paint needs more pressure or a different spray tip.

I've heard people have good luck with some HF hvlp guns, they have 2-3 models that range from $20-40.

I wouldn't use that wagner sprayer for a car. I paint for a living, I'm not gonna try to tell you that you need expensive stuff but you have no choice but to use an air compressor. Go to hf and get a cheap gravity fed gun. They are devilbiss copies and work great. Try to get a tip in the 1.2-1.4mm range. Borrow a compressor since you won't buy one and go to town.

I bought a Wagner.  It sucks balls.  Clogs like once per quart, gotta tear it apart, makes a huge mess.  And cost like $100.  Be better off getting a small pancake compressor or something for that much.  Also the Wagner is loud as shit, much louder than some compressors.

Admittedly it might clog less with thinner auto paint, I was spraying latex primer.  Shit, I'll sell you mine for $65

Go to lowes and get a gallon of whatever color rustoleum you want along with a quart of mineral sprints and some finish rollers. Mix rustoleum with mineral spirtis 50/50, roll on and do a solid 5 coats. Done. Buddy did it and it actually turned out decent and it looked equal to a macco paint job in the end.

car doesnt need painted. im swapping to 90-91 bumpers. no need to paint the whole car. so i need a specific color sprayed on it.

And you could have all the spray equipment in the world and the right color and it's gonna look different. Send it to a car painter that can blend it in, which will more than likely be needed. Different coat amounts, air pressure....shit's just not going to look right.
