Exhuast cutout.
« on: April 27, 2012, 06:03:31 AM »

I'm in the market for an electronic exhaust cutout.  Any of you guys use one? and if so, which?

And yes I am too much of a pansy to run open header.  I live in SoCal so I bend over backwards as the state cups my balls whenever I drive my car.

I was thinking about using a yukon electric tb on a switch. Cheap and easy!

All of them really suck, much has to do with the heat. Your best bet is doing a full 3" exhaust (or whatever your pussy NA motor likes), except have it crossover & dump on the driver's side, then tee'ing off with a stuck muffler in the stock location. Basicly like dual axle-back exhaust, but with the 3" capped with the cutout. Put an electric TB on the end of the 3" like a mid-2000 nissan or GM, and power it with ~5vdc.

This is what I plan to do. I'm going to test it with a 44mm electric TB I got with some injectors on my teg if I ever get my JRSC on it. If it can take the heat, I have a 72mm TB I want to run the same way with my turbo car. I plan to use a microchip to feed it PWM 12vdc to not burn it out, but still move fast.

Hmmm interesting, I may look into that.  I like the idea of capping it off with the cutout though.  I was just going to put it at the end of the header right before the flange.

Big-enough exhaust is virtually the same as no exhaust for a turbo, sometimes better for NA. Sound-wise it's far better and at worst and extra 25lbs with 16ga. Most cutouts will get fucked up from the road (bumps, rocks, etc) if you stuff it under the front of the car, if not destroyed from the heat.

I actually had a gutted cat with a buddy club spec 2 muffler, so it was like no exhaust. My car was fckin loud. Power was awesome, but loud. I could be heard from blocks away. So I put an Itr muffler I had laying around and sound is much more bearable, but reeks so I'm going to put on a cat. I've know people to get pulled over and reffed because their car had the fumes of no cat.

I want a cutout so when I finally am able to run it at the track I don't have to unhook a bunch of shit and so I can open it up on the fly if someone wants to dance on the freeway.

I might try one of those cheap e cutouts and see how it holds up.

If you just care about ref tickets and the track, go real cheap and get a y-pipe with a bolted on plate. Undo 3 wing nuts and you've got power.

A relatively quiet exhaust for NA won't show much gains over open header. An IS300 or WRX muffler will make 97% of the power an open header will, just toss on a high-flow cat and you're good. No ref tickets, no noise.
