help with sinktrap info *NSFW*
« on: October 28, 2012, 10:40:12 AM »

Now to my question
I've got a vitara engine for my 88 crx si and now it's come down to the manifold. I'm not sure I want to use a ebay log because I don't really care for them so I got to thinking about running a sinktrap with my holset hx35. I know the theory being the lenght of the runners with effect spool time as well as pipe diameter will effect the spool time as well so basically I'm looking for input from those who have had them or have them to see what worked or did not work for you. I have been searching like crazy for the past 3 or 4 days and not a whole lot has come up about spool time or performance with these setups so any input would help thanks

I'm looking at something similar to these 2
I kinda like this one best because it's divided and should help with flow but not with the home depot elbows off the manifold though

But i also like this because it would be stupid simple to make

This is more what I think i'd like to go after if I did it

Full sized radiator or a half core? Hx35 would be pretty snug with a sinktrap full rad and stock crossmember. Don't think you'll be able to make it fit with a full rad. I ran a sinktrap like the 2nd pic I posted and it spoiled ok, but the stock 4-1 cast mani killed top end power.

will be using a 1/2 size radiator. You said it spooled ok but stock mani killed top end. What turbo was this on and where did it start to spool and where did it start to die off?

Was a to4e 40trim 70ar exhaust, with a stock a6. I think some of it had to do with the fact it was a basemap, and I went real conservative on it. Saw boost @ 3k, and 12lbs by 4700. Only ran it for about a week b4 I went b series. Started to die off about 6500. But that could have also been the turbo. But I don't see it dying off @ 12lbs. It started to die off on my b series @ 22psi and 6k.

I went from a Chinese cast manifold to a topmount I made myself. Spool really didn't change. Use a dirty cheap 4-2-1 header if you do this so your top end doesn't suffer.

So the question should be what size pipe are running to the turbo? My header is 2-1 the out let there is 1 5/8" . So what size to run as to not choke the flow down?

The thing to think about is each runner carries 2 cylinders worth of gasses, but each fires 180* from each other so they won't fight for "room" like a mini-ram or log. Most manifolds use 1.5" pipe, which is closer to 1.6" ID, for each runner. That's a cross section of ~2 sq". Something with a 2" ID would be over 3 sq", and more than enough for most setups.

I'd recommend the 4-2-1 ebay header. Mine, the one at the top with $20 worth of homeboy depot fittings, sucked in terms of flow. I was lazy and didn't remove the threads, nor did I open up the stock manifold outlets. Worst was the bolts, they always came loose. If you use studs/nugs, put a weld bead at the other side of the stud to keep it from loosening, and use castle nuts w/cotter pins through holes in the studs to keep shit tight. No form of lock washer or lock nut will hold with that heat. At least nothing that costs less than $30 per washer.

For my down pipes I always use Honda exhaust manifold nuts, never had one back off. The turbo inlet just has split washers. Never had one back off.

So running 1.5" from the 2-collector should be fine?
