ok, my turn for a simple no start problem i cant figure out
« on: January 07, 2014, 08:27:17 AM »

bone stock 98 civic sedan. 100k miles. was having intermittent stall problems which i think is the ignition switch. if you touch the key when its on all the dash light go out. the stalling problem was described as a very cut and dry off. no stumbling. well, yesterday it stalled, but was more of a stumble then die, then wouldn't restart. after some quick checks of all the normal stuff, i finally got it to try to start by unplugging the injectors. it would only increase cranking speed though and not actually run. once the fuel was cleared out, i plugged the injectors back in and it would try to fire, but instantly flood again. plugs looked like shit so i tossed a new set in, no change. cap doesn't look great so he is going to put a new cap and rotor in it today while I'm at work. i checked ignition timing while cranking and it showed about 12*. gonna try a compression test tonight after work, but it sounds perfect when cranking over. no stored codes in the ecu either

It has a very bright spark with the plug out of the cylinder. My obd2 scanner shows injector pulse when cranking. Don't remember the number. .3-ish ms. I think. Plugs get soaked with fuel when trying to start.

How far will the spark jump?

Didn't check, but it was one of the brightest white sparks I have ever seen.

Yeap this will give an idea on the voltage output.

If you can get it to jump a 0.080" gap plug, I'd think you have health spark.  :noel:

We'll, the spark gap was well above spec. The plugs were worn. I'll check the spark distance tonight after work.

Small update, the owner put a new cap, rotor and plugs with no change.

You need to practically dump fuel in there to flood it. My guess is something is amiss with the injector wiring or ecu. If all the wires from the ecu suddenly ground, you have 4 injectors dumping fuel at 100% duty. If they all disconnect, you get the same as fuel cut.

The other thing I can think is the FPR isn't adjusting pressure, and each injector sticks open after the 1st command due to crazy-high fuel pressure. Seems unlikely.

I'd pull the fuel rail & injectors and crank the engine a few times to see if they're pulsing.

Ended up being that the timing belt jumped a couple teeth.

Dirty crank pulley looked like I was seeing ignition marks while checking with a timing light during cranking, turned out to be TDC marks.
