Grinding/vibrating front end - bearing, axle, or what?
« on: May 30, 2014, 10:26:20 AM »

Long story short - my brother moved out of state and left my parents to sell his 96 Civic. Yesterday I helped move it for temp storage, and it was the first time I really felt unsafe driving a car.

Problem: when cruising or decelerating above 20mph it has a grinding noise w/vibrating that sounds like a bearing beyond bad, but it goes away when I accelerate moderately to hard. Steering wheel doesn't wobble/vibrate, the chassis does.

I didn't have much time to look, but I felt & heard the crunching when driving it slow in the storage lot. I had a bad rear bearing in my del sol recently and it's nothing like that, but I've never felt a horrible front bearing. I know what bad tires and horrible rotors are like but didn't feel like any of that, however it's been sitting for months and rust around here is ridiculous. It acted more like loose lugs, but didn't feel the same.

Any educated guesses?

Sounds like wheel bearing. Left the front up and move the tire left to right and up and down. If you have play in all directions replace with some koyo bearings.

That's what I thought, just never felt/heard a bad front. It will be a few weeks, but I'll take jack & magnetic indicator over to check for play. It's just strange the noise & vibration went away when accelerating.

make sure cv axle nuts are tight..a loose one (on some cars..not sure on hondas..) will let the wheel bearing walk apart..also grab cv shaft and push/pull/up/down look for sloppyness in the joints
