Eclipse 2000 GT turbo build
« on: December 29, 2014, 12:35:47 AM »

Hey fuckers. I guessed I should start a build thread for the Eclipse since I decided to boost it. It wasn't planned until last week, but I wanted to do something fun during Christmas vacation.

I "rebuilt" the heads (cleaned up everything, changed seals and port & polish) last winter and put back the original Fed spec exhaust manifold because the ebay headers that were already installed when I got it where blocking half the exhaust ports... The stock manifold is pretty nice actually. The result was quite impressive actually. The dyno butt says gained a lot by doing all that.

For the spec there's not much to say:

- Eclipse 2000 GT 3.0L V6
- Ported and polished heads
- Ported lower and upper intake manifolds
- Holset H1C. Not sure about the specs and don't really care for now
- Tial (chinese?) 44mm wastegate
- Ebay blow off valve from my old 92 Integra build
- 2.5" downpipe
- Apex muffler
- KYB AGX shocks
- Eibach Sportline (I think)

Everything else is stock from what I know. Gotta figure out how to tune that thing... later.

I want this thing to be running in April so I don't want to go very far in the build. Stock might be ok for now and I'll probably go for 3-5psi max. Maybe not even intercooled. We'll see...

Enough said, here are the pictures (they are not in order):

The build is not finished yet. I don't have the wastegate and turbo oil stuff (coming from China) and I have to weld everything correctly.

For some reason the welder is not working as well as before. Not sure what is causing the problem.

Looks like fun Francis, what type of ecu tuning are you using?

The tuning is not planned yet, but I saw on the interweb that people are using ECU Flash to tune it.

http://www.openecu.org/index.php?title=EcuFlash

If I'm not wrong I only need to connect to the OBD2 port and run the software. I have the bluetooth adapter and it works well to collect data, code, etc. Not sure if it's going to work with the software. If not, I'll buy the cable...

The injectors are only 220cc, but they are probably fine for what I target this summer.

Eclipse GT are 205hp/205lbs stock. Maybe I have 220 now. Something above 260 would be fun I think. The intake manifold still breath like shit stock so I could gain some more by buying a GTS or Hyundai intake manifold. The problem is that they are expensive. I've seen none locally and make it ship from USA would be around 250$. It's more than what I spent on the complete turbo kit...

For the history of the car. I bought it last year for 2000$. The car as no visible rust and was not winter driven. It has 100k miles (it's an American car) and the only thing I changed on it is the front shocks and the tires. The guy received 60 calls the same night I bought it and I was the first one.

Those cars go for more than 3500$ here. Example: http://www.kijiji.ca/v-autos-camions/laval-rive-nord/2001-mitsubishi-eclipse-coupe-2-portes/1026342821?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

And it's automatic...

I have to admit that it's a lot of fun to drive. It's comfortable, has good torque, power and it looks cool. The only problem is that my hairs touch the ceiling and if I take a big enough bump I hit my head on top.

I never liked that model of Eclipse until I saw that one. I still don't like the model actually, but I really like mine actually. Maybe it's the color and wheels that make it look better or maybe because the wing is removed I don't know.

With the wing removed it reminds me of a Dodge Stealth. The wing they put on that Eclipse was just god-awful and made the blocky styling look that much worse. I am a bit disappointed you didn't keep the exhaust divided, V6's usually provide perfectly paired banks for a divided turbo. Regardless it looks like it moves a LOT better than stock.

I wanted to do it with what I had in the garage. I had 2.5" piping and it's too big to keep it divided to the turbo. If I had 2", it would be a lot easier actually.

I guess I could have done it, but ground clearance would have suffer. I didn't do it the same way I saw in other V6 builds. They were putting the pipe under the cross member, but it's way too low for me. With the 2.5" pipes at least.

I also did it with a minimum of welds. I think I have 7 welds or something like that... Less fab, more time for beer! ;)

The only thing that make the car look cool is the very low roof. When I get out of the Eclipse and I go in the Integra, I feel like I'm in a truck. lol

I don't know for the transmission, but I heard 300hp on the stock motor, but I don't know if it's because they were not pushing it or something. It's not that much if you consider that the B18 can handle the same thing stock.

As long as the auto has a good transmission cooler and your not driving it like a ass hat I would think it should hold for some time.

Thanks for reminding me I suck at updating my shit.

So the thing is still not running. I think the timing belt as stretched since the timing marks don't line up on the cam gears. (found that last week after 2 months of investigation why it's running like shit under small load)

I received the tensioner and timing belt Monday so it's my last try before I put this thing on fire.

I can't believe I've spent so much time on a simple setup like that. Took me 2 days to boost my integra including tune and now it's been like almost a year to boost that thing...

I had time to work on it recently. Swapped the distributor to a new one and voilà, it works.

Didn't think it was that because the distributor was like 3 years old since the previous owner changed it because of similar issues.

Ordered Tactrix Openport 2.0 and looking at new injectors from HiProfile if he still have some.

Untuned at 3psi it pull pretty hard, but last time I drove it is like last year so maybe it's equal to stock...

They are only 210cc injectors so I guess they are maxed out pretty quick with boost.

As it is now. I had to changed the turbo location so I redid the downpipe and the pipe going to the turbine. I also rebuilt the turbo with ebay rebuild kit.

The pictures are in reverse order. There's a lot of pics if it can help someone on the interweb. I didn't find much info about turbo Eclipse V6. People don't want to share or something?
