Overlanding van: Chevy or Ford?
« on: July 31, 2019, 07:48:55 PM »

Looking to get a cargo van for my camping trips and longer road trips.
I'm a Chevy guy so the Express would be my first choice, but most off roading vans and hipster vanlife vans are Ford. So I'm wondering if maybe the Ford would be a better choice.
I will be putting a lot of miles on this vehicle (50k + per year)
I'm only looking at 2wd vans at this time to save on cost and mpg. Possible 4x4 conversion down the road.

LS everything.. so  Express....

you planning on buying a done van? or building a van? i would just get a semi straight express 2500 with a 4.8 or 6.0 with 80e behind it, then start converting it to your needs as you need...

:mexi: <~he owns the van your looking for right now...or is at least driving it. lol

i wouldn't try to overland a 2 wheel drive rig unless you never going to leave gravel and even then you could still hit stuff that you might need 4x4

"overlanding" is fun tho too bad so many hipster queers do it.

I plan on buying one mostly stock and slowly building it.
The places I usually go I've never needed a 4x4 to get through.
I figured I can add a locker to the rear and just air down.
Plus a winch to pull me out if I'm too fucked.

My CR-Z got 1/2 mile from my normal camping spot last weekend.

I would love a 4x4 van, but that conversion isn't cheap.

Most of em around here are fords I think because lots are diesel. Also it must be easier to do a 4wd swap in the ford as you just grab a trans, transfer case, diff, and suspension from an F250/350 and swap it in. If you're staying 2wd I'd go GM because LS and 5.4's are shit and V10's are insane thirsty.

Cargo vans are nice but what all do you need?
I’m building a van too. It’s smaller but I picked up an AWD Astro Van. A small block is a direct swap and the NP233C transfer case gives it real 4wd. Not to me too mention Journeys off road has a kit for a straight axle swap.
Mine has a 350 swap, with a lift, I’ve got the np233c but haven’t initiated the swap yet.
They are super cheap and the parts costs rival civic parts. Also working them is super easy.
