afghanistan in '02 was definitely not a policing action. also, i disagree with the wholesale slaughter idea. aside from the carpet bombings in ww2, i can't think of the last time aside from a few isolated incidences in vietnam where that tactic was employed. i mean, look at the soviets in ww2. did losing millions of lives affect their social underpinnings? nope, they sacked the fuck up and drove on. lack of morale and winning hearts and minds is what wins wars.

You kill a man's family and let him keep his ugly old wife past childbearing years and he's grateful.  Winning hearts and minds is a byproduct of being the conquering force and rewriting the history books to suit your best interests. 

Why else would people think the Civil War had anything remotely to do with slavery?
