Extract brewing an IPA inspired ale
« on: October 16, 2009, 04:54:29 AM »

Not sure if this is a true IPA, I kinda just made it up as I went. I'm sure the purists will tell me it's not even beer, since I used extract, but pull the stick out of your ass.

This is the barley wine in secondary ferment. He'll soon have a friend.

Couple pics of my wort chiller that I just rigged up earlier. Worked like a charm, more on that later.

Boiling the malt extract

Essential supplies

I didn't have steeping bags, so I used some old socks that were wearing thin. What? I boiled them.

Must drink beer while making beer

Wort chiller installed in brew kettle

Added tangerine zest and finishing hops for the last five minutes of boil

My chiller dropped it from boiling to 70 degrees F in 10 minutes.

The IPA and the barley wine.

I need to make a wort chiller!  I'm tired of waiting for 2+ hours in ice baths to pitch the yeast.  Is your chiller from a kit of some kind?  Looks pretty pro.

Well played sir.  I just bottled my second homebrew last weekend, gonna crack one open tonight i think to check its progress.  I did a pale ale using extract the first time, this time I did an american red using grain--excited to try it, it smelled delicious making it.  Your wort chiller is badass.  The only thing i question is the use of the sock... I think most cheaper socks are cotton and acyrlic, and the acrylic shit worries me a bit boiling it like that.  Interested to see what the orange peels do for it!

We should trade samples.  Can you ship beer usps?

Well it is lager season (for outdoor brewing).  It's a slower process than making ales, but my Oktoberfest lager is in secondary fermentation right now, gaining clarity and deliciousness with each week.  I've made a handful of ales, but this is my first lager attempt.

It was FedEx that shipped the wine. I think you just have to put a special label on it so they don't deliver it to someone under 21.

my chic had ordered it from some site that had beer that you can get with special labels, never checked an ID. guy jumps out wiht a box and i was moving my water in the yard and handed me the box lol.

but the hop plants really smell like shit. he wore a pair of shoes there one night because he forgot his work shoes and the smell of the hops wont come out of them at all so he can only where them to work now without getting dirty looks from people.
